Hello everyone,
I am considering moving to St.Thomas in Aug-Sept with my 12 yo who is doing very well in school in the states.
(currently attending a gifted school)
I read through the blogs and a lot is mentioned about Antilles and Montessori but not much on the other pvt schools, specially All Saints and Wesleyan Academy. Based on everything I have read on the site and my daughters personality (non confrontational) the public schools are not an option for us. Does anyone have or had kids attending these pvt schools? Is it hard to get into college from the islands and do good colleges offer scholarships to kids graduating from these schools? Are there any extracurricular activities like dance classes etc. for girl?

Also, how bad is the crime situation on St.Thomas? I have been following incidents on The Daily New .com and it's pretty scary.

Thanks

IMHO - Antilles School is by far the best, especially if one is looking at college scholarships, Ivy League schools etc.
As for the crime question - a search on this forum using 'crime' as a keyword will bring up tons of opinions and info.

My husband and I toured the Antilles school in March. I'll second Janes recommendation. The campus was great and the staff we met were excellent. You do need to apply to the school.

My daughter will be going in to the 7th grade 9/2007. She has been at Montessori since she was two and we will be moving her to Gifft Hill School on St. John. I have heard great things about Antilles School - but it is not for her. Montessori was great mainly because I am a believer in the Montessori philosophy but that ends at the sixth grade. Montessori has a middle school but I figure if she has to switch for high school, which she will, it is better to change in the 7th grade than the 9th grade. I chose Gifft Hill School because I love the teachers, the head, the facilities. All the children go to good colleges and receive scholarships. That can be said of Antilles as well. I have friends who have their children at All Saints and like that school. All Saints tends to have a higher turnover of teachers but most of the graduates attend college. Their tuition is significantly cheaper than Antilles or Montessori. You can PM me if you have any other questions.

Thanks for you feed back, just a few more questions if you don't mind.

Jane - It seems like you have some personal experience with Antilles. Do you have children attending? If so what do like most and least about the school.

Molly - Will you have a child attending Antilles in the Fall?

glynnswife - You said you have friends that their kids attend All Saints what do they like best about it as for as you know.

I am an over thinker so I need alot of info before I can feel comfortable committing to the move.
Thanks so very much for your responses.

Nikky . . . email or PM SuzanneB who is a regular contributor to this board (and very, very helpful) - she mentioned in a post a couple of days ago that her daughter is currently attending All Saints so I'm sure she could give you a helpful opinion

Nikky,

My children will not be attending the Antilles school. We will only be spending 4-8 weeks in STT to renovate our unit. In meeting with the kids teachers here, we felt it was the best thing to stay with our local curriculum and home school or higher a tutor. Eventually we would like to build, and if we do that and my children will be in STT for an entire school year I would.

Here she is, Miss Helpful herself 🙂
Yes, my older daughter (age 13), is currently in the 7th grade at All Saints. She has made some great friends and I have been pretty happy with her teachers. Ms. Brady has been the principal at AS for 'forever' and it is MHO that she should retire soon, but then again the students really respect (and have a healthy fear) of her. There is a mandatory church service every Wednesday morning but there is no religious instruction in the classroom, where as Sts. Peter and Paul has an RE curriculum. Let me know if you have any ?'s

I did not live on StT. My daughter attended Country Day on StX. However the schools competed against each other and we hosted kids from Antilles etc. They are very similar in cost, outlook, expectations etc.
Perhaps someone who has a chils at Antilles might be kind enough to give you a more detailed recommendation.
Cheers
