I purchased my car from local dealership in 2000, paid cash. Did not receive a title. I will be going to the DMV tomorrow here in STT, because I plan to ship car back this month. Does anyone know what kind of hassle and what to expect to pay out to try and get my title. Thanks for any information.

The title is sitting at the dealership......go back and plant your feet in the floor until they give it to you - it's different on island, the titles don't come directly to you, they stay with the dealership.....or so they did on STX.

Well, let me sort of correct that - our registration was our title on island as long as we had our title from Arkansas on our stateside car.....but when we bought a vehicle on the island, we kept having to go back and back and back to the dealership to get the title - took forever......but in the meantime we had the registration, so I guess it didn't really matter except that we were statesiders who by golly were gonna have a title.....it was something official other than a registration, and it was from the VI - we sold the car before we left......I can't remember what it was so I'm calling it a title, but maybe that's not it's real name after all.......

Okay, so I give up.......Movin', I may have told you wrong, perhaps all you will need to leave will be your registration. The only car we brought back to the States was the one we left with. Unfortunately, the shipper lost the original Arkansas title on the way back.......talk about a lot of red tape to explain that one.......

This thread is puzzling. We have the title to our car. The title is required by shippers as proof that you, rather than a lender, own the car you wish to transport. The folks at the Motor Vehicle Bureau should be able to tell you what paperwork you need to obtain a clear title to your vehicle and where to bring the paperwork. I can't remember where on STT the title is issued but I vaguely remember having to show papers somewhere other than the same building where vehicle registrations and driver's licenses are renewed.

I paid cash for my bike before I moved here. It takes a while for the state to send you the title, for me it was about 8 weeks...by then my bike was already here. I simply paid a police officer here to register it for me so I wouldnt have to deal with the headache. I'm sure any of the people on island that register cars for extra cash could do it for you. Or you could just wait for the title to catch up to you and then register it. For me I couldnt wait that long so it was worth paying someone to get around the red tape. I just gave him copies of all the documents that I did have and he got it registered for me the next day.

When I sold a vehicle I needed a VI title. Fifteen minutes at the DMV on STX took care of getting a new one printed. Be sure to have the original copy of your current registration. If you don't have either the title or the registration expect to spend some time getting replacements for both.
