hello everyone, I have been reading this board a little bit over the past few weeks. I am going to STT on November 3, 2006 with the intention of staying for at least 6 months, maybe more. I have been getting some great and valuable information on this board, so thanks to all.

I am coming from Catalina Island, California and I have never been to STT or even the Caribbean for that matter unless Cozumel, MX counts. I am a scuba instructor and will be getting a job at a dive shop. If anyone knows of a furnished apartment or studio to rent near Red Hook that is clean and in a safe area, I would love to hear about it.

Well, I had many questions.... but reading this board answered them all so far. I am sure I will have more as time goes on, so until then......

Cheers!
Tim S.

Hmm, near Red Hook...sounds like possibly a new employee of another Californian, Chris Sawyer? Have you spoken to some of the other employees? They would be an excellent source of information. You will love diving here! No nasty animals, nice warm water, current that isn't too awfully bad!

Yeah, it is the warm water I am looking forward to. Diving is beautiful here, but the water is cold... especially from November through April (50 to 55 degrees). The scuba diving boards say Chris Sawyer is the best operation on the island, so that is what I am hoping for, but I am talking to a few shops just in case.

Thanks!
Tim S.

Chris has a great reputation and the divemasters and Instructors who I've talked to who worked for him seemed to be pleased with the experience. I'm a PADI instructor, so when we were talking it wasn't just them telling a tourist/diver nice things about a shop. We were talking more about the realities of different places they've worked and what was expected of them by different shop owners. Some other employers didn't get as good of reviews from them as Chris did.

Cruz Bay Water Sports on St. John is looking for instructors. I don't know whether you are interested in St. John or not, but it is commute-able from Red Hook. If so, give Patty or Marcus a call at 340-776-6234 or send your resume to them at info@divestjohn.com.

peace.... bert
