Not sure what hiphop is...something to do with rabbits? And what's an Afro-Beat? I recognize Jazz as music...Soul, too. So I'm guessing that the other things you mentioned are some sort of music? I'm gonna guess that Brazilian Soul could be found in Brazil? The music types that I hear mostly here are Reggae and Calypso (alot of Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, steel pans, etc.).

Ah, Marty....showing your age. Actually, I'm quite a bit older than you, but I have a son who is very much into the music world of hiphop, reggae, club music, beats, etc. He listens to reggae beats, riddims, which are not the "Three Little Birds" type of reggae that makes his mom smile.

When he was on the island he was very happy with sounds coming from the radio stations. He met some folks living on the island who brought him somewhere, to some club, that had music he liked. So, Ron, I'm sure once you're down there listening to local radio and reading local newspapers you'll find music to satisfy your soul.

Thank you both for your input. And Marty, you're never too old for music. Hip-Hop is for you too bro. Try a group called Foreign Exchange. They consist of a guy from North Carolina and a producer from Denmark...hey there's a STT connection right there, DENMARK!! Anyways...if you are interested, check out the website: www.theforeignexchangemusic.com

Thanks again you two...

Hello Ron,

Many of the bars here play whatever is popular on the radio in the pop, r&b, hip hop, reggae world or old songs that were popular a while back (sometimes way back 🙂 ). They play a mixture.

Jazz- there is a guy on St. John that puts on Jazz and Blues. His web site is http://www.stjohnbluesfestival.com/intro.htm Perhaps drop him an e-mail and find out the scoop and get some sort of schedule for performances.

Inner Visions is a St. John band that plays reggae. They will be doing their stateside tour during the summer but usually play at Freds on St. John and other venues, some on St. Thomas, during the rest of the year. Their web site is http://www.innervisionsreggae.com/

There is live music at local bars on different nights. Not necessarily in the genres you inquired about but you could check them out just the same. They are usually posted in the Thursday edition of the newspaper in the what’s going on this weekend section or talked about on the radio.

If you play an instrument, sing you can attend open mic nights. I know Tickles at Crown Bay Marina have one, once a week I believe it is.

There is a live local band that plays on Sunday afternoons at Sapphire Beach Resort. And Greenhouse has a local band that plays some days of the week.

So there isn't like a big city variety going on every night of the week but there are music venues in varying genres. I don't know of any Soul, Brazilian Soul type venues here.

Yes, the clubs that I've gone to in STT played hip hop and I was surprised that alot of what Iwas hearing was not being played in DC. The DJ's are good. I heard alot of creative that they were doing with Tupac/Biggie, Old School , R&B. My thoughts were that I had not heard anything like this back home. I love music also. In DC we got the go-go beat. I like to see the VI tap in to that. But anyway. You'll be able to bop your head up and down. ENJOY!

Thanks Melody...!! I can't really find any club information on STT on the web, and was trying to get a feel for what to expect. Do you have any idea as to how many "urban" venues there are on STT?

Once again thanks...

RON

No, I don't really no that. The Greenhouse is nice diverse place to start. The spot I went to that was what I think you might have been looking for was shut down. My friends from STT take me to Walters off Main Street. It may or may not be your thing. One thing I did was ask around and follow the sound of the music coming from the spots on the side streets. I am going back in a few weeks to STX, but I got to spend a few days in STT. So I'll let you know whats up after that. When you do your pre-move visit. Just ask the locals "what's up?"
