I was wanting to know if a person can build their own home in st croix? Do they have to have a usvi liciensed architect draw the plans? Thank you all for any information you can provide.

Yes, you can build your on home on your own property in STX. However, you do need to apply for a building permit and submit necessary plans. I am not sure if your architect has to be USVI licenesed or not but would imagine so.

Yes you can build your own home. You need to use licensed professionals for plumbing and electrical permits.
To get a building permit, or even an earth change for a driveway cut, you need a licensed drafts-person or architect to stamp the plans. I'm just going through this for a simple deck add on project. Easy to see why so many small jobs simply ignore the additional cost of the permit process.

So no matter where on ST Croix one builds they have to have a draft person or architect involved? Also a licensed plumber and electrician have to get the permit but can a person do there own plumbing and electrical and have a licensed plumber and electrician sign off on it? I m just used to doing my own work and having state inspectors sign off on it. Is it possible there? Thanks for the info thus far.

JHELT1975 -

Yes. Either a VI licensed architect, drafts person, or engineer needs to approve and stamp your plans prior to them being submitted to permitting.

Yes, a licensed tradesman will have to pull the permit for you. You can do all the work if wanted. They may do a quick inspection after you're done, but usually not, just the building inspector will come out. They will charge you a few hundred dollars for this.

I am in preparation to build my dream home on St.Croix. I am looking for a draftman who can redraw and stamp my drawings? Since this post is very old, I dont think there are some businesses around anymore. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

You will need a licensed PE to stamp any drawings submitted for permit approval. You could look up licensed business listings on the DLCA web site. Not the same as a PE license but they would should have a business license.
