Hello Everyone,

Okay, so I'm still looking for a hotel on St. Thomas for my scouting mission in early June. I checked out lots of places, some recommended by people on this message board. I was originally planning to stay inland. I've changed my mind, however, (I'm a female, and therefore entitled to do so frequently, and without notice) and decided to stay on the beach. I'm checking out the Island Beachcomber. It's cheap, and seems like a good location ( amile from the airport and a couple of miles from Charlotte Amalie). Any feedback would be appreciated.

Next, any suggestions for car rental? Do I need a 4-wheel drive to get around on the island? Any good deals? Anything I should be aware of that normally might not come up when renting cars in the US?

Looking forward to any advice!

Ansley

Hello Ansley,

Can't think of any quirks with renting a car here as compared to the states. Try doing a comparison of different rentals; budget, avis, dependable car rental... see which you get the best rate from.

Island Beachcomber is an ok spot; its clean and a nice set up close to the beach, its dated but inexpensive like you mentioned. And yes its close to the airport and I don't remember if you were interested in UVI but its close to the campus if you were. They have a little beach bar; last time I was there the bartender was someone who had moved here from the states so you can see if they might have any tips for you based on their experiences and if its a local bartender they might have some insider info. to share with you as a perspective resident.

All the best!! I look forward to hearing how your pre-move scouting trip goes!!

Thanks, Islander, for the info (as usual). Hope to meet you some day.

Which brings me to my next question: any "get together" happening the first weekend in June? I'd be very interested to meet some of the locals that corresponde on the message boards. Please advise.

Ansley

Ansley,

Kyle and myslef and possibly a few others are planning on heading down June 2nd till the 8th. If you are going to be around, lets set something up. Let one of us know, and if you havent already find one of the email threads going around and join our list of movers

Hey Adam,

I've seen some of the messages from you, Kyle and the others moving down. If ya'll (I'm originally from Georgia) are getting together for a drink on St. Thoams on Friday or Saturday, let me know.

Regarding my move, it's not as imminent as what I think most of you are considering. I'm traveling with husband and child, looking for an attorney job, have to take the VI bar, etc. I'm looking at a year, give or take, assuming I get real excited on my scouting mission. I enjoy reading all of the messages, though, from everyone on the verge of making the move. Exciting! I'm just a bit more encumbered (by choice) to move so quickly.

Keep me posted.

Ansley
