Housing with Pets

My fiance and I will making our final pre-move visit to St. Croix in late December this year. We plan on staying long enough until we can secure (rental) housing. I wonder if somebody can provide some information about what kind of a waiting period one might expect when trying to secure housing when pets are invovled. Is working with realators at all helpful as a renter? From what I can gather from alot of these message posts, it seems like a lot of housing is found via word-of-mouth. Any recommendations/advise for two would-be islanders with a dog and cat in tow? Thanks to all.

I'm going in May for my pre-move visit. Like you, my concern is my yellow lab. Not only is it hard to find short/long-term AFFORDABLE rentals, I have found it quite difficult to find ANYTHING on the net when it comes to moving with a pet (especially one over 50 lbs.) If I find anything when I go in May, I'll let you know. Our plans are to move first, secure jobs and housing that will allow pets, and then ship Hallie here. Good Luck and since we're having the same "battle"- let's keep in touch and keep each other informed! 🙂

Hi there!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I hear ya about the "affordable" part of this equation! If money were no object, I'm sure our situation wouldn't be too difficult to overcome. As it stands, we've been planning our move for the last year but want to wait out the big moving day until January '06 when we'll have a sufficient nest egg to hold us over as we are also moving without jobs. I'm trying, however, to do as much leg work ahead of time, or at least get an idea of what to expect. Please feel free to drop me a line at my Yahoo account - I would love to get your impression after your trip. BTW, which island are you heading for? STX as well?

We are heading to St. Croix. This is going to be the longest 30 days of my life- waiting to go on vacation! We are using it as vacation, as well as a pre-move visit. We are planning on doing a lot of exploring on our own and participate in very few "touristy" things. Where abouts are you from and which island are yall interested in? Feel free to PM that info to me! 🙂 I'll be happy to share any info I've found through my extensive research- email me any questions you have & I'll see if I can help.

Thanks & I'll be sure to share photos.

Good Luck to you both. I am moving to St. Thomas on May 9th without my fiance of 9 years for the same reason. We are having problems finding affordable housing that will take a dog, she is small and a basenji mix so some what barkless but most condo's do not allow pets at alland houses are very expensive. I had to sign a 6 month lease with my mom for the time being until I can find a place to take a dog and then the both of them will join me. We are also getting married in the states in September so thought it best to wait to bring the dog over until after the wedding so we don't have to kennel her.

Hope you both have better luck on St. Croix.

Well, I thought it was impossible to find housing for me and my four dogs (all large), but did! It was word of mouth, but I got 2 possibilities with more people telling me of other possibilities. I found a 3bed/2ba house with a fenced 1 acre yard that will take all 4 dogs! It is expensive, $2000/month, but I will use this as my home base in order to find and buy my own house. I feel fortunate to have found this. The other house was a 3 bedroom house with a guest house in the East End for $2800. Very expensive, if you ask me!
