Good day everyone! I am soooo impressed with this forum. I have literally had every question answered by reading the posts and not much left in question. However 🙁 I have been overwhelmed with unclear expectations of finding a home. The net is not helpful and mostly vacation rentals. NOT good for someone who will be relocating the whole family and living in STT for the next 2 to 3 years. (will be more clear in contract signing Sept) We are a family of 3 ...one teen girl...also 3 pets. I realize the pets may even be too difficult at least right away. With that said...we REALLY need a long term 2bdr. I am desperate to try to wrap this up. I do not feel I will have a problem enjoying the island as a home. We would not have a problem with signing a years lease. We presently live in a very small community. My social life consists of going 10 miles from home on Saturdays to do grocery shopping....that is it! I will not get claustrophobic as many of the main landers do and neither will my husband or daughter. We are all pretty much nature lovers and live very simple lives. Our budget will be 1500.00 to 1800.00 monthly. We do not necessarily need a house. Oh please, please, please.......someone give me a productive lead so that my child and I can join my hubby a.s.a.p.
Oh...my child has a horse we will be leaving behind. I am curious about possible horse rental and riding and have not been able to find much info. On the subject. With my greatest sincerity and appreciation, Rose

Rose - I saw a 2 bedroom in Mahogany Run posted about a week back. You might want to check there. We just bought there and it's really nice. I'll see if I can find anymore details for you.

I, too, am having problems finding short term rentals on the internet! I just discovered this means and came across your posting a few minutes ago. From what place will you be relocating? My husband and I will fly to STX Sept. 8-10 for job interview and exploring. Best wishes!!! Donna

Awsome and thank you "givingtree" for your help!!! I cannot tell you how releived I am that I am being welcomed so quickly, and feel especially grateful if I end up finding a LONG TERM lease. It would make my move so much easier.

Hello Donna. I will be relocating from North Carolina in Dec and my husband will start his relocation sometime in the last 2 weeks of Sept. From where are you relocating? We will be on a rental budget of 1500.00 to 1800.00. I am now realizing how hard it will be finding a place. And a very big GOOD LUCK to you also. Keep in touch and I will look forward to your sucessful report!

Hello Rose,

Welcome to the board. Finding an apartment, house or condo to rent often means either being on island to do the looking yourself or relying on a realtor to do the looking, describing to you and signing the lease from away. Often times you will find a larger price range when looking on your own; a realtor’s selection will be medium-high price range. But based on your budget this wouldn't be that big of a concern anyhow. There are usually a couple post on the board for apartment openings, you can look in the classifieds in the Daily News online (it doesn't contain all those they have in their print paper though). Since your husband is going down first, he might stay in a small hotel/inn for a few days... perhaps you and your daughter could come down too for a few days and then you can look around and find something, sign the lease, he moves in and you guys return to the states to join him in December. Or if you can't come then he can do the looking on his own and find something.

Horses: Perhaps your daughter can volunteer at the
Virgin Islands Community Cooperative Thoroughbred Retirement Effort Facility. You can read a recent article at:
http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/index.pl/article_home?id=7877947. That same place used to offer private lessons and a summer camp prior to becoming the retirement facility – I don’t know if they still offer lesson/camp. There is a horse riding excursion operation on St. John also.

Hey Islander! Thanks so much for the welcome and horse info. My daughter will be thrilled to find that there are atleast some horse folks around the island. As for finding a home. I guess I will have to come down and do the legwork as my husband cannot even find his shoes in the morning LOL let alone a good deal on a monthly rental. My own fault I guess for spoiling him. However, I was hoping to not have to do this as it will prolong the family move by spending more funds. Oh well...I will not give up. I look forward to embracing the island ways and cuisine.....will be looking for some "jerk" recipes and such. I suspected as much about the ads online verses the ads in the actual paper. Maybe I can do a little trade.....a home scout for me and some cheap products from the states for an interested islander.....coffee, clothes etc....??????? I am an Ebayer and am considering selling products to the USVI. Did some research and find that a 5 lb package will cost 8.85 to 9.85........wow...I expected it to be more expensive. Good day Islander and thanks for everything.

My husband is studying a job opening in St Croix. We live in Florida ("hurricane capital of the U.S.", ha!) and will travel to STX in Sept. to analize the situation. I was raised in Venezuela and Puerto Rico, so moving back to the Caribbean will be easy

Rose,

I was in hurry yesterday and realized I didn't finish my "e" to you properly - sorry! My frequent flying trips from Florida to San Juan, PR has taught me that flights go up Dec. 15 so try getting there before that. If you want to go down to the island to explore housing, try playing around with dates (be flexible) so you can find something reasonable. A real helpful search engine for me has been www.sidestep.com You have to download (it's secure), but I have managed to "beat the system" practically every time!. Sometimes booking two separate flights instead of directly to STT might get you some good fares (ex. from your airport to SJU, and then from SJU to STT). Best wishes! - Donna

Don't bring to the Island things that can become moldy. I brought things down and had to settle for a 2 bedroom apt that has no option to put an AC in the window so a lot of my items are nasty now. We have two dogs so we could not get into a condo like we really wanted.

We would like to have purchased a standing AC but the Island has given us a lot of unexpected exspenses.

But the Island is so beautiful you have to go out and enjoy it or every day life will run you down.

Rose,

We have very similar plans in the works. My husband leaves September 7th...3 days before our anniversary. Funny how that worked out. He gets to be there for the anniversary and I get to be here still going through the endless pile of possesions!

I would love to visit with you a little. If you get a minute, email me at kellymrtx@yahoo.com.
