Just curious. Anyone know anyone in the VI who operates a hydroponic garden, either as a hobby grower or commercially? I'm talking legitimate growers, not crops the growers are hiding from the police. Thanks. I'm looking for ideas for a magazine article.

there are some folks who use hydroponics, but did you know that STX is the leading industry authority on aquaponics? Quite a setup. The course at UVI this year drew more than 60 folks from all over the world. There was only one "local" student this year, out of the 60+ students.

Yup, they have a set up at UVI. I went to their hydroponics seminar where they give you a tour and explain everything, quite educational. They are doing fish and vegetables in an integrated system. If you go to UVI, look east and across the field and you'll see the rain collection structures. You've got to go around to the south/east side of that complex to enter it. There is a stand that sells the tilapia they grow on the edge, which might be a good place to start asking questions about who to talk to. They have limited hours, but as I recall are open mid-day, mid-week.

Great! Thanks. I'll definitely follow up on the UVI info.

If anyone knows the name of someone who's doing hydroponics as either hobby or commercial growers, I'd love to hear names and/or contact info. Similarly, any garden centers or nurseries that, if nothing else sell hydroponic supplies. With luck, I can wangle my boss into helping pay fora business trip that turns into a PMV.

I seem to remember seeing some basic hydroponics items at Gallows Bay Hardware in St. Croix not very long ago. Perhaps someone else noticed if they are still there.
