Hello, I am going to be one of the newest residents to St. Thomas. The company that I am coming down to work for is puting me up in a hotel for about a week while I find an apartment. I am 24M from Louisiana that may be looking to bartend or deckhand on the weekends for extra money. What area of the island should I focus my apartment search. I need something cheap but I do need air conditioning and all the usual basic amenities. I am very serious, the plan is in the works and I will be there soon so I really need the help. Any response would be great. I also am not going to know a soul down there so it would be nice to have a few contacts. Thanks Daniel

Daniel,

If you are from Lousiana then think back to what the weather was like in Spring. That is basically what it is like here. The temperature in STT is usually 70's or 80's with high to moderate humidity. This of course comes with a wonderful breeze from the ocean. My point is that you may want to go without air conditioning since you are looking for something 'cheap'. My husband, myself, and our kids are living on STT in a spacious two bedroom that does not have air. We are doing okay with it. You should be able to find a small one bedroom from 600/month on up. Once in a while you see something cheaper, but I am trying to give it to you straight. You may want to look for a home near where you work since transportation could get expensive.

I suggest doing some searches on this site for more answers to your questions. A lot of info gets repeated so you should be able to get a lot of good info. Good luck and come to our next get together on STT. 😉

Thanks Teresa,
The company I am working for is going to supply me a truck for work and personal use. I am sure that it wont be anything fancy but hey who can complain! When are the get together's? And could anyone tell me what area of the island to move to?
Thanks Daniel

Hello Daniel,

When you get here, do an island drive to feel out the areas and see which one(s) appeal to you. Some folks like the Northside of the island for its residencial feel and others like the East End because it has both the residential with the commericial. What are you looking for?

We don't yet have the get-togethers on a regular schedule or date but generally we post something that says who is interested in attending in August or September and then folks say I am or we are and we get going in that way. So keep posted for the next one!

I am looking for something that is going to be safe. I personally don't care, 12 Gauge, but my girlfriend and our dog will be joining me in December and I don't want her to have to worry. I have heard that Red Hook is a good place for people our age. I guess I will find out when I get there. I will be arriving at 3:21 pm Sept. 9. that way I will have the weekend to look around before I start work on Monday. I will be in a hotel until something hospitable comes along. So if anyone wants to grab a beer that Friday let me know.
