...but I miss some aspects of living on STT a ton!

The down island view - sweet!

The night sky on the north shore of STT is awesome. I'd watch shooting stars nearly every night and some beauties, at that. One the west end of STX, it's like someone took a giant eraser and removed half of the stars. The light pollution is really bad. In 2 years on STX, I've yet to see a shooting star.

Night Fishing. I fished nights for a year on STT. I'd regularly get into huge tarpon and big ol' snook. Does anyone know where I can catch tarpon and snook from the beaches of STX? Is there any place on this island that can be fished at night with any degree of safety?

Neltjeberg - my dog was in heaven.

You should go to the beach at night to see stars on the west end. I work on sandy point at night and the stars there are amazing on a clear night. At cottages the stars are great too. Where are you on the west end? I live in the rainforest and see great stars at night there too. I would think there'd be far more light pollution on stt...maybe you're just in a bad spot here or something.

go out to point udall, can't possibly NOT see at least a few out there. almost no light pollution at all, stay for the sunrise if you're really ambitious, absolutely breathtaking!

Greetings stxem

Perhaps I am in a bad spot for star gazing. With relatively little lighting around you on Sandy Point, I'm sure you see a much nicer night sky than I do. That said, light pollution is rather diffuse. Surely it must be affecting the night sky at Sandy Point.

On the north shore of STT, much of the light from CA is blocked by the mountains. Looking east (down island), I'll bet I was seeing 5th magnitude skies on many nights - 4th at minimum. Here, I'm probably looking at 2nd or 3rd at best.

I remember 6th magnitude skies on the Outer Banks of NC in the early 70's before the area started to build up. They were amazing. As the area started to build up, the night sky was being lost and there was a big push for night sky compliant lighting. I attended a couple of meetings at WAPA on STX when solar powered, night sky compliant street lights were being discussed. The consensus was that, with all the crime on island, the more light - the better. That's a shame. This far out in the Atlantic we should be treated to some amazing skies.

Heh heh, let me into Sandy point at night so I can listen to the surf and watch the night sky! LOL...I'll help ya do whatever you do. 😀
