There's all kind of space stuff passing overhead. We're fortunate to have minimal light pollution in the VI. If you'd like to get an idea of just how much stuff's up there & when it's going to pass over your head (and where!), check out:

The whole family saw it tonight! We saw it through the scope and could identify solar panels and some of the various modules but it was moving waaaay too fast for a picture.

Houston, thank you.
Good evening everyone,

ISS will be making another outstanding 6 minute run over the Virgin Islands this Tuesday evening:

Tuesday - June 14th
Time: 7:32 PM
Run Time: 6 minutes
Path: Slightly off center at 40 degrees above the horizon
Arriving from the WSW and Departing to the NNE. (WSW to NNE)

Although I don't post "early morning" ISS sightings, the following two 6 minutes run times may be of interest to a few observers who have requested special AM sighting opportunities:

Wednesday, June 15th - Time: 5:17AM
Run Time: 6 minutes
Path: Just off center @ 50 degrees above the horizon
Arriving from the NW and Departing to the SSE

Thursday, June 16th - Time: 4:15AM
Run Time: 6 minutes
Path: Off Center @ 40 degrees above the horizon
Arriving from the NNW and Departing to the ESE

Get your coffee and enjoy!
"Give em' a wave!"

I can't believe after my husband and I have been talking about wanting to see it and having it marked off on the calendar in big letters-- we still forgot it.... I'm determined to see it tomorrow night. Thank you, Swan, for the reminders.

I put it in my calendar ! On my iPhone - with a very unsettling alarm tone. I hope I don't fall off the deck and realize it is my ISS alarm !

As always, thanks Swan !

Paula,
I think you are looking at a plane. Stars don't blink red, green and white!:S

Hi Lizard,
No, it wasn't a plane because it didn't move. It REALLY blinked and stood out from the other stars because of the colors. We're in another building this trip and can't see that angle, unless we walk out into the parking lot, I guess.... My husband and I both noticed it because it was different by the blinking and colors than the other stars. We just assumed it was a satellite. I'm hoping to see the ISS tonight!

Lizard and Paula are both partially correct. The phenomenon of stars appearing to flash colors is called scintillation and is very common on clear humid nights with stars which are near the horizon. Looking at stars at lower angles means that you are seeing the star's light through over a thousand miles of atmosphere, unlike stars viewed directly over head where the atmosphere is only a few hundred miles thick. The moisture in the path of the star's light acts as a prism and creates a vivid light show of flashes and color changes, especially with brighter stars. I got a call a few years ago from a neighbor who swore that Sirius ( the brightest star in our hemisphere) was a UFO. It was Spring and very humid, like now, and Sirius was low in the western sky around sunset. Later in the year I was able to show her Sirius higher in the sky and explain the effect she had seen.

There are Satellites that flash however. The iridium satellites have polished antennae that reflect the sun's light in predictable ways. They are distinguishable by their fast movement against the sky behind them.

G'evening Sunny Caribe,

Hopefully the sky tonight will be clear to see ISS at 7:32PM - The schedule/ details are 5 posts up.
I also posted for you two AM sightings for Wednesday and Thursday early morning!

Thank you very much for the explanation of scintillation and also on phenomena like the well-known Iridium Flares. They, too, are amazing to watch!

Enjoy and "Give ISS a wave!"

G'morning everyone,

Below I've posted three of the most promising ISS sightings coming up this week by ISS over the USVI (PR/BVI also):

Wed.,July 6th
Time: 8:23 PM
Run Time: 2 minutes
Path: Overhead @ 88 degrees
Arriving from the NW and Departing to the SSE

Thurs., July 7th
Time:7:25 PM
Run Time: 5 minutes
Path: 30 degrees over the horizon
Arriving from the N and Departing to the ESE

Fri., July 8th
Time: 8:05 PM
Run Time: 3 minutes
Path: 30 degrees over the horizon
Arriving from the W and Departing to the S

Reminder to use a cellphone clock for exact timing. And ISS will appear as a bright, nonblinking light as it gently crosses over the night sky.

The Space Shuttle, "Atlantis,"(STS-135) is scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center at 11:26 AM (EDT) on Fri., July 8th. "Atlantis" will be the final shuttle to be flown after a successful 30+ year shuttle endeavor; the US Space Shuttle Program will be retired after "Atlantis's" Mission to the ISS.

I hope the skies are clear this week! "Give em' a wave!!!"
