I am moving to STX in a few weeks and I would like to line up my telephone and internet service prior to arriving. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best service to use?

How's the connectivity with surfbest.net, Paul? I'm in the same situation as Darby Kirby. I'd like a solid service that I can run a webcam off of, but don't necessarily need a cable modem or DSL.

Josh,

Yes there are a couple of internet cafe's. What island?

Darby Kirby,

Island Paul's internet is the cheapest that I know of. There is also some others. I cut and pasted an old posting for you which was actually a compiling of several postings. Anyway here it is:

We just had a thread on this so I cut and paste for you. These were from different people - just to confuse! 😉 Hope this helps!

First Pasting:

surfVI, PowerNet, and Choice are all local.

surfVI is $13.96/month unlimited, with tech support, 7 free email addresses, and 10Mb storage. 774-5780 or www.surfVI.com

Choice is 19.96/month, last time I checked, and I'm not sure how much PowerNet (the local phone company's product) is.

Pasting #2:

surfbest.net is available with unlimited service for $12.50 / month. The access numbers are the same ones used by folks with Earthlink Service (who pay more).

Best tech support folks I've ever encountered. If y ou call with any question and are asked to leave a message, or e-mail a support question.......the most often simply pick up the phone and resolve the issue immediately for you....about as personal as you can get.

.............and never ever do you NOT get into your e-mail - unlike the very troublesome local services which are to be avoided!!!!!!

Pasting again:

Although I no longer live on the island, while on St. Thomas, I used a small ISP out of PA - you can find them at www.pennswoods.net or check St. Croix computer stores or Radio Shack if you have one - they should be able to help you set up. Penns-woods offered the best dial-up service I found there at a rate of about $19.95 a month.

Still Pasting:

Well, you have Choices! (pun intended - I get a little wacky after a day with three kids 7 and under)

There is Choice - www.choice.vi
surfVI - www.surfvi.com
Innovative - www.vipowernet.net
Pennswoods - www.pennswoods.net

I used www.viphonebook.com to find some of these.

That was it.

Darrell, I almost always get connected. There was in fact only one time so far, for a few minutes when those logging on kept me from doing so - but only one time in over a year is not bad....and even then I got on in just a few minutes.

The access number used is the same one that is used by Earthlink.

Several of the 'pastes' that Terese did below, are things that I wrote about the service.

I would steer ALL away from viaccess as they lose e-mail, I mean seriously lose e-mail (I'm not really sure how that's technically possible, but they do) and e-mail is quite often down for several days at a time.

Thanks everyone!! What a great help you've been!! Think I will probably go with surfbest.net. We use Earthlink here in VA and have been pleased so it sounds great to me!
