Is having a car a priority in STX?

Hello. In May my fiancé and I will be relocating to STX. I am contemplating on whether I should sell my Mazda sedan here in the states, or have my car shipped to STX. Either way, we will more than likely be without a car for a week or so. What is the geography like on STX? Is it a large spaced out island were having a car is a priority?

Everything is spaced out - if you truly want to see the entire island, you have to have a car or a lot of money to pay for a taxi. Get the car, you won't be sorry. Depending on where you work and live, I suppose you could get by without one, but I certainly don't know how.

Use the search feature at the top of the page and type in "shipping car" or whatever....you will come up with TONS of info on it. A lot will depend on where you are relocating from and how much of the legwork you can do yourself.

You need a car! Public transportation is spotty. Taxis are expensive. There are no grocery stores within convenient walking distance of downtown Christiansted. Unless you plan to shop at convience stores or eat all your meals out you will need to take a taxi.

Walking, riding a bike or a motorcycle on the island are problematic. Do a search of prior posting for extended discussions of these topics.

Taxis charge by the passenger so if you both go to the store it will cost you $10 - $20 each way, more if you live in a remote area.

Spend the $2,000+ to ship your car.

You will need / want a car. Until your arrives, try Sharon at Midwest Auto Rental. Very nice to deal with, about $200 per week. That's who we always use. She will leave it at the airport for you so it will be there when you arrive. Her number is 877-772-0438.
Tell her Terry from AZ recommended her.

DEFINATELY get a car. When I first got here I didn't have a car for a month. I was so stir crazy!! If you do ship your car, find out if it was made in the U.S., otherwise it takes A LOT longer. They say you can tell by the VIN Number. Mine started with a "1" Which signified it was made in America. (that's what the customs agent said.) I have a friend who's car was made in Canada and they've been waiting over 3 months to get it here.
Also, there is alot more paperwork if you still have a loan on it.
