Is it hard to find a job?

I'm relocating to the islands soon and had a question about work.

I have experience as an electrician, and lots of restaurant experience. I plan on getting my diver's license, and possibly a captains license. I have also completed a real estate course with Long and Foster, and have an arborist license from Bartlett Tree Experts. I have done landscape, lighting, and fish tank design, and have built simple websites. I would like to get something other than a bartender/server job if possible, but will do it in the meantime if that's all that I can get, or do it in addition to another job if needed. I'm well-rounded and I'm used to working a lot, and having my hands in multiple cookie jars. What is the job market like on the Islands?

Thank you in advance for your responses and advice!

The job market here is not in good shape right now and our official unemployment rate is over 10%. However, if you're not planning on doing a PMV but have enough money to get you by for a couple of months you can see what might be available when you get here. No point looking for anything until you're here as employers won't even consider you unless you're physically on island. Good luck.

If you can do all of that, you can find work. At least here on STX anyway.

The job market isn't great, but there is absolutely work to be found.

If you come down and want to make it work, you will have to earn it.

Indeed, with all your various experiences, it should not be difficult to find a job, especially if you have a great work ethic.
It may take you awhile to find what's right for you but it's out there.(tu)
Captains licenses are expensive these days and one must have verifiable documentation of vessels served on, in order to even apply for a license. Bring money to tide you thru getting an apt., a car and a couple months food and utilities. Island life in not cheap! best to come prepared! 🙂

There's a posting for an electrician on one of the VI job boards. I think it's on career.vi.

It will probably be easy for you to find work, but a permanent situation other than bartending may be harder to come by. You might want to contact Brothers Workshop? Brothers Keeper? Hopefully somebody can help with the correct name and contact, but it's a non-profit group here on St Thomas that teaches boys trade skills. I'm sure they would love to have you help with the program until you find something suitable.

I don't see anything on career.vi other than one from June 5 which was an Atlanta-based position.

If you're going to look for employment as an electrician here best you become licensed.

Ha, ha! There's a listing right on this forum - that's what I saw, but didn't click it. I see the OP has already responded. Uh, oh.
