Island Business Etiquette

Hi,

I am beginning to do business on the Virgin Islands (in addition to some other Caribbean islands) and was wondering if anyone could tip me off to any business etiquette and/or customs specific to the island. I will not be living there (at least for now) but will be interacting frequently with island businesses by phone and in person. I am from the states so am familiar with stateside business etiquette but want to make sure not to offend anyone in my business on the islands. As a frequent traveller I try and shake off the stereotype of the main-lander that requires everyone to conform to my customs! Thanks for any suggestions! This forum is great and very informative!

Jen

When you begin any conversation start with a greeting and if you ask " How are you?" wait for an answer. Yes doesn't always mean yes, sometimes people say yes because they don't want to disappoint you. Don't put pressure on anyone, Cruzians don't respond well. A lot of people just don't return calls so be politely persistant. Good luck.

Start every greeting with "Good Morning; Good Afternoon: Good Night ( does not mean goodbye)". Be sure of the time they are in, 10AM in you zone may be 12Pm in their zone. If you say Good Morning, they may correct you.
