What a wonderfully friendly and informational group you are!!

I am considering trying to start a small food type business in the islands and was wondering what your thoughts are concerning the difference between living in St. Croix or St. John are. I need to make only enough to keep heart and soul together.

I read in a previous post about large discount type stores on St. John, but are there also some on St. Croix?

Also, I would like to come down and spend a few weeks on each of these two islands but do not want to stay in expensive, posh hotels. Any suggestions where or how I could rent a room for a week or two? Would I absolutely have to rent a car?

Thanks for your ideas and time.

What do you mean by a food-type business? I can grow just about anything. I may soon have two acres of land here on St. Croix to work with.

We have K-mart and Plaza Extra discount stores.

You can stay weekly at the Danish Manor in Christiansted: 340/773-1377 or 800/524-2069. Get a room on the top floor way in the back where it's quiet.

You're pretty much stuck in town if you don't have a car.

Angela: I believe you were reading about St Thomas- no large discount stores on St John.

I guess I'm confused by what is meant by a discount store. We don't have WalMart or The Home Depot, but we do have Kmart, if that counts.

And not just ONE Kmart. Oh no. We have TWO.

There's also a Cost-U-Less, which is kinda like a Sam's Club, and two Plaza Extra grocery stores.

Thanks everyone!

I will be going down to the Islands in August and scout things out. Hopefully, I will be blown away (not literally!) and start making plans for a move. We'll see.

I can see that this site will be priceless. So glad I found you.
