It's official: I'm moving down (to STT)
I came down; I looked around; and I don't mind it at all. The scenery is amazing, no doubt. No winter (OH YEAH!). And The people, over all, are very nice. I was actually shocked to see cars stoping to allow pedestrians to cross the streets, and others in. In general, the people there are very good at following the "zipper" method (I like to call it); let one call in front of you, other car behind you, etc. Traffic is definitely horrible. But looks quite manageable.
I was shown pretty much all around the island, except for maybe the far north-west (work is in Yacht Haven, so it doesn't matter). Plus, traffic much better to the north/east! (downtown is bad!). I stopped in your big K-Mart, the main grocery store, and your "Costco-like" place (forget the name) all in the Tutu area. And drove by a few other places.
All in all, manageable. I can see where quality is sacrificed, but no everywhere. I definitely plan to get a membership to your warehouse place.
So now I begin the count-down. To when? unsure. It's pretty open. Kinda depends on how quickly I can take care of the major stuff at home (car, motorcycle). I do have one question now: buy a car there, or buy here/ship down? That seems to be the great debate. I hear both sides. On the side of buy local; it's because of customs and time it can take to ship a car. Plus, costs about 2k to ship a car down. For buying here, I hear better selection, better quality. I know what I want--I told myself for the past 5 years my next car will be a Jeep Wrangler. I would have done it in Austin, TX, I'm gonna do it now (even though it'll make me "just like everybody else" down there). I'm just debating over where to buy.
Next up would be finding a place. Any leads would be helpful. My boss down there (he'll probably be reading this, too) will be helping me out scoping place, and good locations. My only real requirement is a large dog (german shepherd I spoke of earlier). Well, I guess furnished and washer/dryer would be helpful, too. This the perfect season, I hear, too.
So, here I come. Down to STT. And my god, are the relatives already bugging me to visit. Geez!
Welcome to Paradise.
Pamela
Buy the car here. Think of it as recycling. And welcome to the Island I have been calling home for about five months. 🙂
I would look at prices here and there and then figure out where the best deal lies. While jeep wranglers are usually rated as very unreliable, but they have a great resale value. If something as a good resale value stateside it is usually more here but not always. Hope your handy and congrats on the move. I would humbly suggest going with at least a V6 in the islands, we are glad we have had it on more then one steep gravely hill.

Yes, I'm quite familiar with Donkey Hill. 😉 Good poing on V6. Thanks.
So far, prices for Jeeps is ... well, shocking me. They are surprisingly expensive for as little as they come with. Trying to find a nice little sport, bucket seats, no back seat, definitely nothing cloth or leather based seating. AC a bonus, not required. Basically, pretty trimmed down.
