Can someone on STT help me? I enjoy making jewelry and other various crafts, and was wondering if there is any market for selling things like that to local stores, or even to tourists on the beach. Does anyone know if this is a money making opportunity? Or am I just reaching to far?!?

Hello Janette,

There are folks doing just that in St. Thomas... both for jewerly stores making high end custom peices; rings, necklaces, pendants... and also those selling beaded and crafty lower end peices from Vendors Plaza and booths on beaches like Coki Beach.

Also there are crafty people that make everything from hot sauces, soaps, teas, rum balls to cakes, candles, Christmas ornaments to sell.

thanks for your response islander!!
Would it be feasable for me to just walk around selling things, or do I have to mess with getting some sort of permit, or booth? If so where can I find info about aquiring permits or booths? Keep in mind that this would be a hobby for me, not my main source of income -- I just enjoy jewelry and stationary making and would like to make a profit off my work!!

Janette,
There are also several arts and crafts shows throughout the year which would allow a venue for this sort of thing. The next one I know about is in November at Tillet Gardens. We had another one in Compass Point for the last three years but it will not be held this year - long story 🙁 There are several shops which carry this sort of thing on consignment. As long as it is a hobby and not your main source of income for a while, it is prefectly feasible to do that here. When you move down, hit some of the stores like Dolphin Dreams in Red Hook or Nayda at Coki Beach and they will be more than happy to discuss the issues with you. Good luck.
Pamela.

The VI Island charge you gross tax on everything over $50 000 I believe. So if you are worried about a license requirement but think you will be below the $50 000 it can't hurt to have one. You might just have a little more work filing your taxes. It all depents if you can handle being fined ones. Often they give you one warning and you are required to get your license in a certain time period after that.
