Hello,
I'm moving to St. Thomas in December of 2007 and I will be in need of a job. I will be student-teaching during the day Monday through Friday, so the job would have to be after school hours or on the weekends. I would be interested in a tutoring job, after school care, and even a steady babysitting job. I have been trained in Applied Behavior Analysis and currently tutor a child with Autism, so a job as a tutor or aide for a child with Autism would also be great. I have also been a waitress and bartender for 3 years so that could also be an option. My resume is on the VI Employment/Job Board under maria-carafa. Thanks for any help anyone can give!

The public school system is in dire need for trained professionals in the area of special needs. I sure hope you can find a place in the system to really help out. Currently, once a child is thought to need testing for special needs, it can take a year before testing takes place, if ever. Good luck with everything and hopefully you will find the job you like. Many times people won't hire you until you are on island, but you should get a few responses before December. It is just hard for many to know who or if they need someone in December right now. Bartending jobs would be easier to find if nothing else come thru, but most definitely found only when on island.

You won't be able to find a second job until you are on island.

Linda J,

What you said, much shorter and to the point. I have to learn how to do that. 🙂

Maria -

Please do a search for danieljude on this board - he is on STX but has worked extensively with autistic children while stateside and looked into it in the VI - perhaps he can steer you in the right direction on who to talk to to use your ABA training (I don't know if he actually does ABA, but did some variation of it) PM him - if he has any info, he will gladly share it.

As the aunt of an autistic nephew, I commend you for your work - God bless you, it's a tough one - you must be a very caring person.
