Hello, I have been reading this message board for a couple of weeks and would like to know if there are any jobs in the VI that an old person (57) can get. It seems that people are rich retirees or young poeple having their flings. I have never posted a note before on any board so have not a clue how it all works. i'm in VA and have done construction/home repair for 30+ years.

I was little younger than you are when we moved here. I don't know which island you are considering, but talk to the hotels & resorts on whichever island you choose. I started out as a beach attendant handing out towels, teaching snorkeling and kayaking. That was a good gig. When they found out what I had done in the states, they transferred me to the Engineering Dept. That was interesting and usually enjoyable. I retired again last month.

Thanks Ric. Are you staying for retirement years?

Yep. That's why we moved here in the first place.

aeneas: The marketable characteristic of most "older" people is a work ethic. And that will get you far. If you also have a talent or skill, bingo! On St Thomas, there are a lot of older (70s and 80s vintage) condominiums that need new kitchens, bathrooms, retiling, etc. These jobs are too small for some of the construction companies, but would be a source of income for someone who does a good job. Once you do one unit, word-of-mouth works very quickly around here...

A great way to find work in the VI is through contacts. Good old fashion face to face networking. If you already know people here hang out with them. Meet their friends. Let people you meet know you're new to the islands and that you're interested in finding work. Don't limit yourself to only what you did in the states. If you hear of something interesting, even if it's not what you want to do forever, go for it. At the very least it'll keep you busy, you'll make some money (don't expect stateside wages), and maybe meet someone who has a better opportunity to offer. Display a good work ethic, show up on time, and you'd be surprised how word of mouth might steer something your way. Also, many people have more than one job. That can be very attractive in some ways.

This is a land of opportunity providing you're here to pounce when an opportuity becomes available. Bring lots of patience, though. If it was easy everyone would be doing it! 😎

If you can work as a handy man, you can easily find work here (STT). I regularly hire handymen at $25 an hour. Those who show up and do good work stay busy.

Try to get a job with most any big company at age 57 and you will find out that's old. Of course they won't tell you that's why you didn't get hired.
