East Ender TO answer what is it I do? Currently I work in classrooms with students who have been placed on the autism spectrum and are able to attend daily classes with intervention or one on one support. I have a degree in psychology, but find it much more interesting to
work with children. I have experience with a variety of students. So what I am looking to do is bring down a program which uses the Lovass Behavior modification method to help the autistic child to process their world and learn how to function in their surroundings. I am just not sure how diagnosis are made on VI, what I am saying is: through the school system or medical. That is where I would have to start to get the support I would need to begin the program. So I will be looking at each of these factors to find out how much need there is in the VI. Either way I am coming down to enjoy the island life.

cf: Here is the Human Resources website for Education: http://www.teachusvi.net/ There is an Autism Task Force, I will try to get you a name/e-mail address tomorrow. You might also want to contact danieljude (Dan Gilbride) from this board. He is involved in the field on St Croix. If you have special ed credentials, that would be the way to start. In general, government agenices are not excited about newcomers trying to save the world. You would need to get the job and work on change from within...

East Ender Thanks for the e-mail and the info. I have lived all over the world so I understand the territorial-ness that is common in most government agencies. I really don't want to change more to add a new option. I am most interested in finding out what the percentage of children have been accessed as having autism. Knowing the number will help me understand where it would be practical to follow through. I will contact the education department and I will walk gently with my questions and concerns. I understand that if I am to work with these individual in the future it would be best to have a good working relationship. I am not jumping on the next plane, or at least not yet. Thanks so much for all the information you have been a real help and I really appreciate what you have done. You are showing a side of VI that is often not seen. Is seems that many move to VI and just as many move away, which tells me that often people come with preconceived ideas and many not be willing to adjust to the new environment. I hope not be bring that belief with me.
