Good luck on St John. Plan on commuting to St thomas for a job. Someone posted earlier about a teaching job on Water Island.

there are plenty of jobs on st john-- stu do we need to remind you of the *boatloads* of people coming over *from* st thomas to work on st john?

sara, if you have already found housing, you *definitely* have the hard part [for st john] figured out. if you are as open as you seem to be to different kinds of work, you will have no problems at all. and if you are interested in teaching, i know the public schools are a little "stand-off'ish" about hiring new people, but if you make yourself known and perhaps even a pest over this school year, you should be able to get a public school job. private schools [pine peace school, coral bay school, little tiny baptist school] are small, hence very few jobs... but when one does open up, they are smart enough to look for experienced teachers...

for this season though, youre absolutely correct in assuming that the restaurant job thing can get you through and pay the bills...

good luck!
=)

Yes jobs are available but if you are renting on St John and especially is this is a "travel life" experience, they would rather hire someone who will be permanent. Yes you could probably work as a waitress at the Westin or something. No school wants to hire transients.

Sarah, when you get to St.John, look for Connections - a store, and you will find a message board posted with all kinds of stuff and hopefully jobs.

Since you mentioned cleaning villas you might want to check with http://www.windspree.com/index.html

e-mail: info@windspree.net

A short while ago I was in touch with them about a cleaning villas job, they pay $20/hr and you had to have your own transportation as many of the vacation rental properties are near Coral Bay, the other side of the island from Cruz Bay.

Also send an e-mail to Chris Cody who is a chef on St.John...he posts frequently on this message board....chef@chriscody.com....is I think his very newest e-mail address. If that doesn't go through, check to see what he lists as his e-mail address on this message board.

Good luck, you have made the hard part happen....finding a place to live on my dream island. Jobs should be able to happen.

Yes I am moving to stj in two weeks as well. It seems to me that there are more jobs on the island than there are places to live. I'm still looking for a place to live, and from the way it looks to me, jobs in resaurants, bars, and resorts will be plentifull. I wish you good luck, I'm sure you'll do just fine. Also, how did you secure you're place without being there, and how much is it? I have some potential rooms, but no one seems to want to make a transaction without you there in person. Again, good luck!

I just saw an ad in the paper today that First Bank is hiring service reps. It would be a cooler (as in A/C) environment than waitressing. It shouldn't be hard to get a job at the Westin though, check out their website and see if they have any positions posted - I would wait till you got here to actually apply though. If you plan to get a job at a hotel, they only take your resume/application on certain days of the week. You may have to wait a week to get a phone interview, and then a week after that, they may call you in for a personal interview - point of story - expect to wait at least two or three weeks before a job is secured at a hotel. Good luck!

how we got a place:
i put out a posting on the message board that i was looking for a place on st. thomas and some guy wrote me saying that he was moving down in a few days and that he was also looking for places. we stayed in touch and he found that he loved st john and st thomas was okay. so when he found a job on st john he thought he would look for places there. he found a fantastic 3 bedroom in a huge house. Then we found two other girls who were willing to share the third room so that s that.

good luck with your search. if i hear of anything i will let you know.

sara, are you living with a guy named richard dominguez? I was an alternate on his list of roomates. I just thought that was funny.
