*What is the job situation on St. Thomas or St. Johns for a middle age white person.
What kind of pay could we expect?
Thank you, Kathy

Hello Kathy,

🙂 Providing your age/race does not help me much 🙂 although I smiled, Thanks!

What type of job are you looking for? Office, Clerical, Professional (medical, legal, accounting, computer, teaching), nannying, restaurant, sales, hotel....

Would like to help, please be more specific about the line of work you would be seeking, that way the folks on the board and I could perhaps describe that fields pay and job openings better.

Many jobs in the USVI are tourism related, particularly on St. John, villa, hotel, shops, tours, restaurant. On St. Thomas there are as well these same types, as well as quite a few clerical and office type jobs. Getting office jobs often require networking a bit. So you might have to take another job that is easier to get into like sales... and then continue to look for an office job if that is what you seek.

Thank you islander for your reply. I was just there for 10 days and noticed that alot of the resort type jobs and government type were held by the natives. I live and work in a resort town in Colorado and have lots of experience in property management and resturaunt and banquets. Was just wondering how that would work there. My husband is a plumber.
Also I was eaten alive with noseeums, at night mostly when in bed. I looked like I had a disease. Have already mailed a mosquito net down there for my next visit. Also heard that pine oil works great!
This site is a great resourse for all of us State side, Thanks.
K

Hello Kathy,

Happy to hear that this site is helping you!! 🙂

Yes there are lots of resort jobs and tourism sector jobs. Tourism is the basis of our (St. Thomas/ St. John) ecoonmy. St. Croix as well, however they also have agriculture...

You have experience in the resort field so this would do very well for you. I would suggest perhaps contacting some resorts from the states. Find out if they have job openings, applications. Also property management - perhaps some villa/real estate agents that do villa rentals....

For your husband. If he wants to pracice as a plumber in the USVI, he will need to go the Dept of Licensing and Consumer Affairs and get a license for the USVI. He could get a job, as well with resorts, in their maintenance department. Or he could try to establish his own business again need license. Or he could do both, work at the resort or something similar to get a constant income, and also try to network to set up a private business.

No-see-ums in bed - WOW, never had or heard of that experience. Usually they are on the beach, or come out around coast lines when it is rainy. Were you camping??? You can use deet if its that bad, or skin so soft by Avon some people say works not as smelly as Off, you can try and get an off, non scented (not sure that exist, but it should :-),, and a mosquito net will help also.

Good Luck. Please come back and share with us your moving experiences once you relocate. Your advice/experiences might help others who want to plan the same adventure you are getting ready to do.

plumbers are desperately needed on st john. it may be a little difficult to get his foot in the door, but once the contractors found out he was here to stay, didnt drink himself stupid at woodys every day, showed up to the job sites on time, and did good work, he would be booked solid.
[same goes for electricians, wood framers, other skilled construction trades on stj]

I, like so many other people, want to move to st. Thomas. I am a recent college grad and am willing to do any type of work. My question is, are there any placement agencies on the island? Thanks in advance.

Andy,

I looked up the usvi yellow pages and did see several employment agencies. Their URL is www.usviyellowpages.com and try typing in 'employment' in the search box. Hope this helps.
