Suggest you call or email WAPA directly on Monday.

Previous owner needs to close his/her WAPA account.

Then, take your signed deed to WAPA and they will hook you up.

oh yeah. Don't forget to complete the transfer form. It's available online at the WAPA website.

WAPA is near Sunny Isle.

Just take your deed into the office to facilitate the transfer.

You'll also need a check for like $141 dollars which includes deposit and account activation and I think a little credit for the first bill. You'll need the meter number or if you have the account number for the previous owner that works too. And photo ID. Have fun with the new condo.

They should be able to find meter and old account number from the address on deed and you can provide the sellers name. Probably best to give them a call Monday morning to ensure you know what they'll require.

Normally, WAPA is the first stop after the closing and seller provides buyer with account information.
Good luck and enjoy your new home.

I agree they should be able to find the info, no problem, however, I would still take the meter number along. As with any type of service, particularly government and other "official" type of service, the more redundant you are with your information, the smoother it will go. Be sure you have ID. I would even take a social security card....just because.....

BTW- WAPA has been doing a lot of estimated meter readings but your bill won't necessarily indicate that. So don't be too surprised at whatever your next few bills are. Could be estimated based on previous account usage.

I've never had to do that. I hook up in my name when I have a vacancy, and
my tenants go to WAPA with a copy of the lease and sign up, and a few months late I get my deposit back. I've never had to close the account myself.

That is not what I said. I do not turn off the account.
When a tenant moves in, WAPA terminates my account when a tenant signs up for an account.

Interesting. That can't happen in FL. The account holder has to terminate or the account continues in that name. Doesn't matter who owns the property.

You see why this could be an issue? Yeah, I know, WAPA and all.

That is not correct either. I left the electricity on (in FL) as a favor to the owner since they let me out of my lease early, and the new tenants that moved in had it hooked up without involvement by me. I got my deposit back within the first billing cycle.

and the electric was on in the house that I bought when I moved in and I had it hooked up in my name afterwards without missing a beat. Both times it was with TECO.

Duke won't do that.

I'll be using them when I make my move.
At least, they'll let you do everything online which I'm happy to see.

If Duke tells you that you need a deposit through the online portal, then call and ask to have the deposit waived (assuming you have good credit and are up to date with WAPA).

Thanks.
Luckily, I have excellent credit and always pay bills on time.
