Looking for a rental in a safe neighborhood. We are considering a home in la grande princesse. Anyone know if it is a good neighborhood? Any suggestions for a safe and gated neighborhood besides Judith's Fancy? Also wasn't sure about Frederiksted? Seems to be many homes for rent in Frederiksted area just wondering if one area is safer than another. We are on Hovensa property and want to get into a neighborhood outside. We would like an unfurnished 2 or 3 bedroom in a gated area if possible with a pool. Not sure how realistic that would be. Any info would be helpful. Thanks to all.

Anything is realistic if you have the money. 🙂 Actually rental rates are generally lower right now as there are more rentals then renters right now, so take your time and find what you like. La Grande Princess varies wildly in neighborhood, some is closer to water, some close to a very busy road and some of it is up in the hills. Homes range from low income to rich, so in some ways it's like most of the island, you have to go street by street. We lived there for a while up in the hills and had an incredible 180 view. But I would not have felt safe there without my dogs. Not many gated neighborhoods, Judith Fancy is one and very close to La Grande Princess. I will get slammed for this but I have lived in F'sted and IMO it is not as safe, especially the closer to F'sted you are. Rents is F'sted are cheaper then center and east. If they are not think long and hard about it, because they should be.

It sounds like you don't know the island well. For your first rental I would suggest center or east. Sign a six month lease and get to know which part of the island you really like best and want to live in.

Thanks for the info. We spend a lot of time at cane bay. We are also getting a boat so would like to be close to a marina. My husband has said that F'sted is out but I know many people who live there. I don't think it would be for me. We do have a large dog but don't consider her a good deterrent. What about Green Cay?

I have a boat at Green Cay Marina. People there are friendly and helpful, both boaters and staff. Pleasant and quiet with access to beach and pool. Clean restrooms with showers. $20/foot/month. $25 for liveaboard.

It's about as safe a place during storms as one can find on St. Croix. (Salt River is another hurricane hole.)

I suggest you visit and chat with the folks at the office.

It sounds like you are on St Croix right now, so you should be able to go out and look around either by yourself or with an agent. As Hiya said Princesse and Frederiksted are a mixed bag with good next to bad. If your husband works at Hovensa, someplace like Judith's Fancy would be a good choice and I have seen some rentals advertised lately. Another choice, but farther away is Shoys,We lived there at one time. Green Cay and Ms Bea might also appeal to you. A lot depends on how far you want to drive and what you can pay for rent. I still like much about the east end. Good luck in your search.
