I'm a 22 year old college student preparing to graduate with a degree in landscape management from the University of Maryland. Im currently looking around at prospective jobs and would love nothing more than to find a job on one of the islands and was curious as to if anyone had any insight into the availability of jobs for grounds crew workers (at a hotel perhaps?), landscaping companies, or general agricultural jobs I might have some credentials for that hire workers for year round labor. I'd appreciate any wisdom anyone has to share...

Hello Charlie,

Which Island???

I would suggest you contact the larger resorts (ie. on St. Thomas Ritz Carlton, Mariott ect.: on St. John Caneel and Westin on St. Croix the Buccaneer and Carombola) get in touch with human resources and see about sending your resume for ground/landscape management positions. Landscaping companies on St. Thomas are usually small businesses, owner works it basically... they might have 2-3 employees for helping with big jobs. There are a few plant/landscaping businesses that are bigger (Plant Depot and Bryans Plants on St. Thomas come to mind, the latter is a family business but they have employees too.) Many landscape jobs are hard hard labor intensive jobs for not much pay unless you are the manager, supervisor, owner or do on the side jobs where you maintain the gardens of larger homes/villas for a monthly fee so basically have a small business venture.

Take a look in the yellow pages http://www.viphonebook.com and look up the plant places and give them a call and see what you find out. Also contact the larger resorts.
