Leasing a car?

Good Afternoon everyone!

My fiance and I are moving to STT at the end of the summer - we decided not to take our cars. His Pathfinder is on its last leg and is not worth what it would cost to ship. My sedan would not do very well with the steep inclines of the Carribean (have to push it over large hills as is! j/k). He plans to buy a truck when we arrive and we hope one car will be enough for awhile. But I was curious, do dealership lease cars there? Seems like the island can be pretty rough on a car and I didn't think the dealerships would want to take the chance on a lease. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks in advance!

You are right, leasing is not necessarily a profitable enterprise in th VI. You can rent a car for around $800 a month ($9600 a year) You can lease a car for $480 a month, plus about $400 a month in insurance and fees, plus repairs..etc.($10560 a year +++) Yea your right.. you can walk into a rental agency and rent a car for less than leasing.. something is wrong with this picture....If you can buy..cash if you can..you will save a bunch...good luck..

The problem with rental over leasing is that during peak season that rental that was $500 permonth will now be $1200 per month (it happened to me) At least with a lease your payments are constant over the entire year. Atter a year here I just realize that cars are expensive here and that is why there are so many taxis. The bus system here is very unreliable so if you have a job its either taxi, dollar safari, or drive your own. Most people moving down here go into shock when they see the high cost of cars herre. Cars you could buy for $2,000 or under on the mainland go for $5,000.

If you purchase a car on island be certain to check that it has a clear title. (be really careful here, and yes it takes time) There is a real common scam of people placing their cars up for sale, however it may be a friends, stolen or a rental.
