Seriously, it depends on how well you avoid getting traffic tickets.

The U.S. Virgin Islands has not defined on the books when one becomes a resident.

Not sure if I should give more info not knowing why you want to stay here long term without becoming a resident.

You have to be a permanent resident of the USVI for one year before your VI residency is established.

I have known many people who violated that law/rule for years.

Miami has special residency requirements? 😉

It depends on why you're asking. You may have to get the answer from the Miami Department Of (whatever your area of interest is).

For tax purposes, you are considered a bona fide USVI resident for the tax year if you live in the USVI for at least 183 days of the year. If so, you would file your income taxes with the VIBIR instead of the IRS.

Is this person serious? How do you lose residency in Miami? Unless they're trying to run away from something and plan on "hiding" here. It won't work it's a US territory.

My bad - it may well have changed since I moved here in '84 (there may have been some sort of a change in 2004?) as it seems even to register to vote only requires being in the territory for 90 days! But it would be interesting to know why the OP is asking ...
