left hand driving

Just a quick question to those of you already living in USVI: So you drive on the left side. I am not too worried about that. We have travelled quite a bit in countries where they do that and put quite a few miles behind us without a problem. But it seems that people seem bring cars from the mainland, does that mean that cars in USVI have the steering wheel on the left? Or is it, like in Asia, Australia, England, etc., on the right?

Just seems kind of "freaky" to drive on the left and sitting on the left...

Hello Fredrik,
Yes the steering wheel is on the left like American vehicles. Crazy is it not? In fact you will not see too many foreign vehicles. So no matter where you are from you have to make an adjustment in driving in the U.S.V.I.

Wow... adjustment indeed. Bet passing is a challenge, but maybe not so necessary if I understand the general laid-back attitude over there. Seems that this site, which covers things so well in all other respects, kind of overlooks this bit.

Thanks for your reply Teresa, much obliged.

Fredrik: It really isn't that difficult to get used to. You keep as far to the left as possible, and being on the left gives you a good perspective! 😉 Passing, well...most of the roads are two-lane with a double yellow line down the middle. Like Dirty Harry said, "Do you feel lucky?" I always figure I am going to get there sooner or later!

True - so true. Can't remember the last time I felt the urge to pass someone on the road here. Oddly, after ten years here if I turn out into a road without traffic in either direction there is still a momentary panic of which side of the road to turn into. Just a second of hesitation but it is there.

I still have trouble in parking lots. And you're right, an empty road always makes me think for a minute.

I don't live in the USVI, but visited last week. I was nervous driving at first, but got the hang of it after a while. My only bit of advice, aside from "stay left" of course, is to remember to look RIGHT when pulling out. I had to keep telling myself that. Driving on STT was a blast, though! Plenty of adventure!
