Life is What Happens While You're Busy Making Plans

I think that's a quote from a John Lennon song. It is also the situation with Ric and me. We had always planned on living here until age/health considerations dictated otherwise. Well, I did. Ric planned on leaving island as ashes in an urn!! But life has happened and changes are coming for us.

We are still in good health and more active than we've been for several years. But, sometime after the first of the year, our status will change from full time crucians to part time snow birds. Family considerations back Kentucky mean we will spend the majority of our time in Louisville. Our plan is to be based in Louisville, get an apartment, and live there 8 months out of the year, spending 2 - 2 month periods a year in STX.

Over the next couple of months we will be packing up and moving out. We are mailing or shipping some of our stuff back, but you'll see advertisements here for our cars and some of our furniture and other household stuff that it doesn't make sense to ship back.

And in March or April or so we'll be contacting some of the landlords who post here looking for a short term, 2 month rental.

I'm keeping track of our costs and will post a "moving back" report after the move is complete.

For a couple of 60-somethings who married at 20 and had 2 kids by 27, the opportunity 8 years ago to move to a place lke St. Croix was truly a dream come true. The folks at home, especially the grandkids, are excited to have us back. But we both know our adventures are not over yet!!

And besides, we'll be here so often, you'll hardly know we're gone. Linda Janes

Good luck with it Linda, being with the family is important and you still get to return to STX, good deal. I'm luck that one of my boys lives here with my 2 GKs, still have another son in the states but for now this is OK.

ENJOY and stay with us on the forum, like you never left...

Good luck guys.
Let me know if you require more boxes.

We might consider 2 month rentals in our apt. Depends on which months. We currently use it for guests etc.. Inquire before you come back. Includes Dish TV and BBVI(tu)

Reminder. FWIW,, While you are moving "pause" your Dish account. Once you know where you'll be staying, call Dish and they will come install your dish. Take the receiver with you.

we're probably going to store some stuff here - our dive equipment, my crock pot, you know, inportant stuff. We can just store the disk as well, thanks for the idea.

Linda--My wife and I are outfitting a condo on STX from scratch and would love to know what you're planning to sell when you're ready. PM me if you'd like to discuss.

I remember meeting Ric when he was the "beachboy" at the Buc. Sorry your plans have changed. Mine have several times since then.

This just illustrates one really important part of relocating to an island...if life and plans do change, you have to have the means of getting off the island and back to the mainland.
The 'one way ticket' idea is just a great idea, not a practical life plan. It costs a lot of money to relocate back stateside...especially if you have acquired pets, kids, stuff etc during your time on the island.
Living simply on low wages is all well and good, but it is hard to save for a move home on that kind of lifestyle...and no matter how much people talk about "here to stay"...the truth is hardly anyone really is!
Linda just highlighted a big kerplunk in a lot of people's plans - an exit strategy for when life happens.

And Swan would consider it a pleasure to PM you both future outstanding ISS sightings over Louisville, Kentucky for your family and grandchildren to enjoy - as you share your time between KY and STX. She is a real "show-off" over that part of the mainland!

I wish you all the very best and every happiness....

Good luck with your move back to the states. It is fortunate that you will be able to come back for two months a year. While in Kentucky you will get to enjoy all the good fruits and malls in the states. Lucky you! Take Care, Carole
