There are several live-aboards both on St. John (no "s" unless you're thinking of relocating to Antigua) and St. Thomas. Do you already have a boat which you're planning on sailing here and parking up? Pamela can give you info on that. Have you lived on the water before? Are you maybe looking for a houseboat to rent? Or what? Just asking!

Suzq,

As STT Resident said there are many live-aboards in both areas as well as STX. It is a lifestyle choice. I tried it and while I love the water, love sailing and everything about it living aboard was not for me. The challenges such as laundry, grocery shopping, water, electricty, etc. were too much hassle while trying to work a steady job. Rowing into shore during a rain storm while dodging ferry wakes was also no fun. Or you get off late one night and someone has "borrowed" your dinghy. Would rather sit ashore and watch "Survivor" in front of a nice television and a fan than be a part of it at this stage of my life.

That being said, the live aboard life style is perfect for a number of my friends. They feel strange on land and would never consider moving.

Many people live on boats year round here. They take cover in hurricane holes during storms and most, if they are smart, stay on land with friends during storms. My place is always full of them! Nothing better than weathering a storm with two or three charter chefs 🙂 Many other people run down island during the hurricane season.

Moorings cost $5 per year per foot of boat plus your ground tackle. Fairly easy to still find room in St. Thomas. Not sure about the other islands. You will see ads "Mooring for sale" but you cannot sell the mooring. You are buying the ground tackle only and must still apply for the annual permit.

Email or PM me if you have questions I might be able to answer.
