(for specifics preferably related to St Croix)
Lots of my background is automotive related.
Does anyone have contact for the dealerships on the island? I tried googling but can't find any info.
Anyone work at one or have close friend that does?
Would a Transplant have issues trying to sell cars there? (Would locals avoid buying from them?)
Do the dealerships offer Health insurance for an entire family?(even if I have to pay extra)
What hours are the dealerships open down there?
I have heard they are hiring often.

Shipping cars??
When they say car built in the US do the mean a domestic vehicle (Ford, GM, etc). or one that was really built 100% in the US?
Could some make a business out of bringing cars onto the island for resale? (Buying and selling not the actual transport part)
If shipping a car can you use it as an over sized suitcase?
I have access to many cars here and could bring one/ some down.

I have a general mechanic knowledge would it be safe for me to do side jobs? Do they require licensing?
What are some of the most common vehicles?
Are there any Mileage or Age issues?
Emission testsing or concerns?
Any high demand for certian styles? Pick-up, Mini Van or just regular 4 door sedans???
Diesel?

I am sure I will have more as some get answered.
Thanks
Christian

Hi Van

My husband is the service manager at Caribbean Auto Mart Chrysler/Toyota. CAM has podcasts for people like you every now and then. From the looks of it you want to sell cars. Right now the dealerships are not selling like they were a few months ago so the other sales associates are probably hurting. I don't know about the GM dealer. Insurance is Cigna and we have it for a family rate. Go to www.caribbeanautomart.com for info on HR

If you are a certified mechanic and in the field of Toyota right now that is what is needed.

If you are a good mechanic you will never want for work on any VI -- If you wanted to buy cars in the states and sell them here I suggest you start by buying cars here when people leave , fixing, detailing and reselling them first, so you can get an overview of what cars sell, and for how much. Learning the shipping and customs/taxes/registration process takes some time for a vehicle importing business to work profitably.
Most common vehicles -- Toyota, suzuki,Honda,Jeep, chevy, ford -- [unofficial personal observation]
Most people buy what they can get serviced.
Age issues are rust and road wear, most cars have dings, scratches or worse and it is expected. Because of the limited size there is no long distance driving and most cars will not wear out because of mileage issues, if you can get an island car that has over 150K miles on it it is old and well used.
No emissions concerns currently.
There are a lot of SUV types -- [again unofficial]
Doesn't seem to be much diesel demand.
The people I know that work at Dealerships have been there for years so it would seem to be a workable career.

Thanks for the info everyone.
One of my biggest concerns would be getting my tools there! I am not a certified mechanic but I can do decent amount. I am hobbiest but do most of the work on all my personal cars. I am a better salesperson than mechanic but side jobs are always nice for the $$$.
I hpoe to continue to educate myself on the marketplace down there and my look into getting certified before I came. It does not hurt to know more, and we have good training here.

Off the topic but does the university have a part time MBA program. I looked at the info but found it hard to understand.

I never found any HR info on their site.
And how do they dress in the dealerships in case I want to stop by on my PMV and still make a good first impression?

caribbean auto group is hiring sales consultants. I'm thinking about working for them when i get down there in sept. I've been in the car biz for the last 5 years, and have worked as a sales person, manager, and finance director...and by talking to them, they do seem like a pretty good group to work for.

here's the link to their ad on career.vi

Cool. Keep me posted!!! Have you talked to anyone there? When I get close to my PMV I was hoping to stop in. I would need to commit to a job prior to making the full move.
