So I moved to STX in August. I'm sure many of you have been through this. Do I file my income taxes in VI or MD, or both? Any help will be appreciated!!!

First, you must determine where your income came from----if you have any income, say on a W2 from employee, you will probably have to file in the state or territory this income was earned in-----either as a resident and or non-resident. Each state or territory has resident and non resident requirements---------------------go to websites for the state of territory you earned the income.

Second, the VI considers you a resident in MOST cases if you have been here over 180 days. Again, regardless if you were here as little as 30 days, if you have income coming from a VI employer, and receive a W2VI------yes, W2VI you probably will need to file either as a resident or non resident.

The BIR, is located behind KMART at Sunny Island. My experience with them , they are very helpful. Go there with the W2 and W2VI, and the BIR will assist you with your question------or even call them.

Based on the information, you haven't lived here 180 days and assuming you have earned income in both the VI or MD, you probably would be filing a MD federal and state for resident. VI as a non-resident----no territory return, just normal federal.

Hope this helps----dont take my advice as I am not registered in the VI, thou I am an accountant, CALL the MD and VI tax bureaus. Or make it simplier for you, go see a accountant on the VI and have them prepare your taxes.Or you make be qualify to have your return prepared for free by th VI BIR.

Good luck.
