Am considering a one year move to St. Thomas. Have heard from an islander that the public schools would not be a good place for my 8th grader due to discrimination against mainlanders ( and a very white one at that). I would appreciate any feedback on this matter.

The public schools are not very good from what I hear. There are some good private schools - Montessori, Antilles, All Saints. The Montessori Middle School has 15-18 students in the 7th-8th grade class with two teachers.

I don't know about actual discrimination, but your child would probably be the only white child in his class. And he may still be in the minority in a private school.

Hello Jean,

There are two public juniorhighs on St. Thomas and an alternative school. There will be some levels of discrimination. Your child would likely be the only white student in their class and perhaps one of maybe 4 or 5 in the whole school. Being the only white student is not a problem if the situation is friendly unless your child is uncomfortable. Your child would certainly make friends with other students there and there would be some that were intrigued that a white student was attending so would approach him/her to ask where they were from ect. but there would also be some students that might tease, make comments and even pick fights. In my opionion the public schools, junior and high school, tend to have small gangs or bullies, where the private schools do not or not as many (perhaps because of small classrooms). Definately research this well.
