Any suggestions on bring my mountain bike with me while visiting? I plan to use it see the Island and as basic transportation in the Fsted area, avoiding 9-5 rushes.

West is a great place to ride. Bring a good lock and lots of tire tubes or upgrade your tires to puncture resistant. The Acacia thorns are wicked. Be careful on the road, the left side driving instinct takes a day or so. If you did one of the off road Jeep tours that would expose you to some great double and single track. Go for it.

Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to ship a mountain bike?

If you put it in a box and bring it with you on the plane it's $50-$100. Shipping UPS or FED X is $$$$.

Riding a bicycle of any kind here is really taking your life into your own hands and risking someone else's as well. The roads here are extremely narrow and windy. Its not fair to people driving in cars to come around a corner and have a person on a bike in there lane and a car coming in the opposite direction. It may be allowed and legal but as more and more people seem to be riding their bikes around places like south shore road it just makes me angry. You may have the right to do it but statiscally it just seems like a matter of time before I or someone else hits you. These roads simply are not wide enough, there is no shoulder and they often are very windy. Often you can not even drive off into the grass of the road because the brush on the sides of the roads are just too overgrown (well the person on the bike could not but a car could causing much damage).

I realize I will probably get alot of backlash for this post but it really upsets me (I really don't want to hurt anyone). I know people are just trying to exercise but I really dont want to hit you. And yes I am a safe driver, But I cannot see around sharp curves to know you're there, and even at 20 to 30 miles an hour you are likely to be badly hurt. On the other hand I know this is one of the trade offs of living here you never know when someones going to stop in the middle of the road to talk to someone or find a goat, cow or chicken there. But I atleast will most likely not kill a person in any of those situations.

Anyways this is all my opinion and something to give newbies something to think about that they maybe never considered when moving down here. If you're a outside jogger or runner, pick carefully where you life as in many areas the roads are really unfriendly for this kind of sport. Somewhere like enfield green or judith's fancy that has a gated community with speed bumps would be a good idea.

The $50 is more likely $100 is each way.

Thanks for information. I think I will leave the bike home for the few days I will be there. Maybe next time after checking things out I might bring it. Shipping new bike in box 150.00 o/w, AAirlines if you take pedals, front tire, and handle bars off secure them to bike it can fly with you for 80.00. I would either wrap it in the plastic stuff at Airports or put it in a box to ensure less dings and scrapes.
