Companion to my earlier post. We won't be moving a lot of personal goods. We have a furnished condo lined up so we only need minimal stuff. But for the few items we will be shipping, can you recommend. We had Allied Van Lines give us a quote but just wonder if there aren't other sources that might be better/more coste effective?

Suggestions?

I only have several pieces of furniture to move to St. Croix and when I spoke to Lee Fleming (Managed Freight) he said that I had to have a professional come in and pack and crate. I got a company to come to my home to give me an estimate (in VA) and they want over $9000! They would not go through Mr. Fleming, but directly to St. Croix. I am attempting to speak to someone at Crowley because a friend in St. Croix had such good luck with them, but I am not getting a response. This is all so frustrating! Many of the companies that I emailed did not get back to me.

If the items are to large or heavy to mail then I recommend that you use Econocarib. They have locations in several major US cities. Google them for locations and phone numbers.

They are a freight consolidator.

1. You pack the items or pay someone like Pro-Pak to do it for you. It cost me $200 just to have a desk and two chairs boxed up.

2. You take, or have picked up the items you want shipped to Econocarib's nearest shipping terminal.

3. Econocarib ships the items to Florida by truck.

4. In Florida the items are loaded into a container (consolidated) and shipped to the VI. I believe that Econocarib uses Crowley to move their containers from Fla to the VI.

5. Lee Fleming i.e Fleming Transport is the agent for Econocarib in the VI.

6. You contract with Lee to clear the items through customs and deliver them to you in the VI. You can do this yourself, if you will be on island with everything arrives and you want to handle tha hassels yourself

7. Lee can also handle receiving you car.

Shipping anything to the VI, except by mail, is a many stepped, paperwork intensive, complicated and therefore expensive process. That is why most people recommend that you bring as little as possible when you move.
