Moving Expenses?

I'm planning to move to STT in mid-late July 2006. I currently have a beautiful...and 8 year old Honda that I hope to sell before I travel, so that's out of the way.

I'm a temp. border with my sister, so I don't have many large items, beyond my television, so that's not an issue.

So beyond shipping and the usual pocket money, what are some expenses that one moving to the islands may not know in advance or anticipate?

Also, I'm currently a high school English teacher. I have an MA in Secondary Ed. and a BA in English. If anyone knows of openings where I can use both or either degree, let me know. I've already applied to Department of Ed in USVI. Editing, tutoring is not out of the question for me. Thanks...

I didn't find anything unusually expensive when I moved down. But, I came down from NYC.

The food is expensive whether you buy groceries or eat out. Gas is expensive at about $3.00/gallon. If you decide to rent or buy the rent/real estate can be moderately expensive. Again I lived in NY so it was cheaper for me, but probably not for others. A lot of places have the utilities included and may even be furnished.

Buying a car can be more expensive. You can probably add a couple thousand to book value for shipping incurred by owner. I paid it, doesn't mean you will have to. Island cars can be a surprise. I've had some friends who have had bad luck buying cheap island cars. In my opinion, it's best to invest in something decent if you can.

Hope that helps! I think you can relax a little, my move wasn't as expensive as I thought it could have been.
