Moving Mistakes???

Can someone please share with the board what they feel their biggest mistakes were when moving to the islands and using a moving company?

1. What did you bring that you didn't need?
2. What didn't you bring that you ended up needing?
3. What were the biggest issues with using a moving company?
4. What is the best moving company serving the islands?
5. What were your costs?

If someone could share their mistakes maybe we could avoid them ourselves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All I brought with me was a shaving kit, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, 5 pair of shorts, one pair of jeans, 5 T-shirts, 2 button-up shirts, one pair of boots, one pair of sandals, sunglasses, and a pack of smokes and a lighter...(and a wad of cash! Haha!)...I bought everything else here. No regrets...

Our company paid for our move so we brought all of our household goods which was a mistake. In our case we had trouble finding a unfurnished house and ended up with a partially furnished home. We put some of our items in storage and will probably sell them before leaving the island.
I would not of brought some of my nicer items like artwork and some furniture because I underestimated how tough this enviornment is on everything.
I am glad I shipped my car I just wish I had brought my old Honda Civic with me as well as it would be perfect for the Island. I also wish I had included a set of tires and lots of brake pads with my household goods since their is not an Infinit dealership on St. Thomas and a delay in ordering everything. I solved that problem by bringing brake pads with me on my last trip to the mainland.
I wish I had purchased and shipped patio and pool furniture with my household goods as I have not been able to find anything I like on the Island.
The main items I would of left at home are artwork, books, important pictures and our wedding album.
I am not sure who our company used in the States to load us up but Viking Movers took care of us when we got to St. Thomas. They did a fantastic job with our move. They even took care of registering our vehicle and delievered it to our home.
My main advice is do your research of what you will need in your new island home and bring it and anything you dont need or think you wont need, leave it in the states. I am actually having to ship some of my items home on my own nickel which was not too smart.

We are planning on selling all of the furniture, bringing clothes, books, kitchen utensils and the animals. We are still wavering on the car, which is worth less than we owe.

On a side note, reading Marty's last post, I am pretty sure he was Papa Hemingway in his last life. 🙂

Papa here...

As for your car, is the amount that you are upside down less than the it would cost to ship? If it is, your best bet is to take the hit. If not, then ship it on down.

Thanks, Papa. I'm sure as we get closer to the actual move, we will make a firm decision about the car.We are, however, WAY upside down. Since it is my partner's car, and not mine, she gets the final call. On top of it all, it is a Monte Carlo, so it rides low to the ground. I worry about the rougher roads.
I am, however, looking forward to the cool temperatures. 🙂

I wouldn't worry about the rough roads or speedbumps with a Monte Carlo. I think it sits plenty high. We have some cars here that are way lowered and they get around just fine.

just be careful with the balance on the car. i had plans to take my car up until a month ago when the bank told me while in lean it could not be taken off the continental US. now i'm trying to sell it by the 16th when we make the final move.

Ok, now we're talking! Great advice on the patio/pool furniture and the artwork. We were considering both. We are going to bring our '98 Ford Explorer and we are using Managed Freight for the move. We are currently looking at who will handle the container once in STT so your endorsement of Viking was appreciated!

Lets keep it going........Anyone else have any horror stories about movers and/or what they brought and really didn't need or something they left behind and couldn't live without?????
