I will soon be moving to Saint Croix with my teenage son who has Down syndrome. I'm hoping to hear if other families have done so, and if the services in the island were able to meet their needs. Please let me know if you are out there! Thank you.

What are your health insurance arrangements?

Hi Jennifer,
I moved my family to STX a few years ago for work from Puerto Rico. I was highly compensated, had excellent international medical coverage, and a 10k annual allowance per child for educational services. Our youngest child of six (at the time age six) is on the autism spectrum. Long story short, we found the public schools were not equipped to handle typical kiddos, much less our guy; private schools were (probably wisely) unwilling; speech and occupational services were virtually nonexistent. Unless you have the money to bring a support team with you, and house them, STX is no place for someone who requires significant support. We loved being there, our typical kids were very happy in Good Hope School, but it was absolutely the wrong thing to do for our special needs child at that point in his development. Fortunately my dw reached that conclusion fairly quickly, and talked to me; we moved back stateside within the year. It's not clear from your note what you are seeking in terms of support, but if it is more than a semi-annual checkup, the VI does not have the infrastructure in place to help your child. Best wishes whatever you decide.
