My wife and I are panning to move to St. Croix from the Mississippi Delta very soon and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on finding a job. My wife is an elementary teacher so I dont think she will have a problem getting a job. I on the other hand am a "Transgenic Cotton Researcher" and a farmer. I dont expect to find a job in this field but I would love to find something related to agriculture or horticulture. Any advice on where to look or what to look for would be appreciated.

Have been living in DC for almost 3 years and am VERY tired of it. Am from the Mississippi Delta as well and not ready to come home. Glad to see your post today. Hopefully we can both get some useful information out of your questions!
Good Luck to you!

Don’t know about education. I would contact the local USDA office (340/692-9662), local agricultural office (340/778-0997), and the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (340/692-4080). Full phonebook is www.viphonebook.com.
Land generally goes for about $30,000 an acre, but there are bargains. There is a 25-square mile aquifer under the South Central Plain (generally decent soil) called the Kingshill Aquifer. The northwest mountains also have decent soil. Minor aquifers are scattered around. There are opportunities across the board-produce, fruit, lumber, ornamentals, cut flowers, seed collection, etc.
If you don’t know, Gossypium hirsutum used to be raised on the dry East End. It’s still growing along the roadside.

Very interesting. But I am not really intending to farm on the island. I just want to do something related to agricultural or horticultural research. Maybe even landscaping at first until I can find something more solid. Any tips or ideas on where to look or whoto talk to?

Hello Brooks,

Perhaps visit the University Agricultural Experiment Station website at http://rps.uvi.edu/AES/aes_home.html and contact them. They are all about research.
