I am looking to get a job with Seaborne Airlines in St. Croix as a pilot and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what part of the island is nice and relatively cheap rent. I coming down in about a week, are there any cheap motels. I look online and i can only find the resorts that cost like $200 a night. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. THank you

Robert

No such thing as a motel on St. Croix, and this is high tourist season when all the snowbirds come down...you may want to look at some of Alexandra's posts to get some ideas about rentals. Things seem to be kind of tight in the rental market right now.

Even with this being the high season, there are hotels that are less expensive than others. Try checking out the Waves at Cane Bay (which has gorgeous views and each room also has a kitchen, so you can save money by eating in), Cottages by the Sea and SandCastle on the Beach (both also with kitchen facilities - they are located side by side in F'sted). These were the most affordable places I could find when looking for lodging for friends and family.

If you tell them you are here on a pre-move visit/job interview, there might be some flexibility with rates (if they have openings, that is) as folks here take care of their neighbors -- and occasionally their neighbors to be.

Best of luck with Seaborne!

Also, call Seaborne and ask them for reccommendations, or ideas. Airline folks are always friendly and outgoing - you'll at least get some ideas of where they stay (or stayed when interviewing) and at best, get an offer from someone there to rent a room.
Seaborne needs pilots - hope the interview goes well. We have a friend who was on furlough as a first officer (furlough was due to lack of 'left-seaters') So, good luck!

I have a two bedroom, 1 bath townhouse with a very new modern kitchen, that includes a new island gas range and hood, new refrigerator, new microwave, washer and dyer and newly installed hardwood floor, throughout. The unit is located in Mahogany Welcome in Estate Mt. Welcome, a quite, family neighborhood and beautifully maintained common area. It is within walking distance from downtown Christiansted, U.S. Post Office, Gallows Bay, the Fast Ferry, Schooner Bay Market and the wonderful Tutu Bene's restaurant.

Seaborne airlines is within walking distance as well; about a 1/8 miles along the boardwalk. Check out gotostcroix.com's webcam and see the area you will be taking off and landing.

I am asking $950 per month with a 6-month lease and $950 deposit.

Hello there. I'm not sure when you were planning to visit, but for people relocating, I rent out both a large guest room and an efficiency apartment. The rates are low and by the day, however I don't think there is a lot of availability on either until the end of April. (the daily rates are $25 and $36 respectively, linen, towels, etc. included and changed 2x per week)

If you are still looking and could let me know the dates, I am waiting for a confirmation for April on the studio. I'm not sure. There may be a week or two in April once I get confirmation.

Best wishes with all,

Dan

Hi everyone!

A friend and I will be moving to STX in May and we're looking for a small one bedroom to share while I look for a house to purchase. We are flight attendants and very responsible. Does anyone have a small apartment near Christiansted or the airport available for a short term lease?

Hi Linda! Got any leads on housing on STX? My husband and I (Larry and Tammy Londer) are in search of a long term rental to occupy indefinitely. We are currently living in a house in Cane Bay, but the owner is taking it off the rental market. We have been living on the island about four years and can provide excellent references. My husband has a permanent position with the Federal Government and I am a homemaker (taking care of him is a full time job!). We are excellent tenants and care for our rental as if it were our own.

We need to vacate our current property end of May.

Following are some specifics on what we are looking for:

Preferences: 2BR / View / Pool / Unfurnished (we have a house full of furniture including W/D and generator, but will consider furnished properties as well)

Location: Mid-island, but we are totally open to seeing other areas

Price Range: $1500/mth

Special Considerations: We have two mellow, cool housecats. They are not destructive in the least and are litterbox trained. We can provide references from other landlords attesting to this.

I look forward to talking to you and seeing what may be available for showing.

Thanks,
Tammy Londer

Robert,
Are you still trying to get a job with Seaborne? I have been interested in going down to St. Croix myself to check it out ever since I saw their article in AOPA magazine last month.

I'm currently a CRJ Captain for SkyWest based in ORD, but something about flying twin otters on floats, and being home every night with the family is very appealing to me (I'm tired of four day trips!) I have about 2000 hrs in the twin otter flying for Scenic Airlines and it was by far the funnest airplane I've ever flown, I've always wanted to fly it on floats.

Anyway I was just curious as to what you've found out, and how things were going for you. Thanks, John

Robert - try giving Seaborne airlines a call. The chief pilot's name is Wayne and he's often to be found interviewing new candidates. Their biggest need is for pilots who can fill the left seat as full captains. They are also focusing on pilots who truly want to commit to a long-term life in the islands and who aren't just trying to build twin engine time to go fly elsewhere. Paying for simulator time to train new pilots only to have them depart the islands through a revolving door is painfully expensive for the airline. The more pilots they can bring on who will stick with the airline long-term, the better the airline will be and the happier all the employees will become. Come on down for a visit and check them out.

Robert or John H,
Seems like I'm not the only one bitten by the island bug when I read the AOPA article. Has anyone found any information about the total compensation and benefits package? The only info I have is from the article and it was very vague. I read elsewhere on the vimoving center website that "full benefits" in the islands doesn't necessarily mean full medical care coverage. Just wondering if Seaborne takes a different stance on the matter. Do they have jumpseat agreements with other stateside carriers? I've emailed the chief pilot and I'm still waiting for a response. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Seaborne does have jumpseat privileges on several other major carriers, including American, Cape Air and Jet Blue, among others. Seaborne also does provide medical benefits, as they are an "EDC" company and employee medical benefits are one of the requirements they must meet legally to get their tax benefits under the program.
