I REALIZED AFTER POSTING THIS IN WRONG AREA. Please excuse me as I am new to Forum and do not know how to delete or move the post.

Hello. This is an amazing and resourceful site and I have read it thoroughly. I have even perused many of the forum topics to become better informed.

I am considering a job opportunity on the island which will move me there permanently. Being a big city person (Manhattan), I know that I should definitely curb my expectations. I am excited about the potential but want to just be fully informed before making a final decision.

I was hoping to get some personal opinions and insights on the best areas of the island to consider renting an apartment or condo. I of course am in touch with a real estate agent as well, but always like to hear the advice of others.

I am a single woman in my 30s who is very active and social.

Are there areas considered more "upscale" than others?
Are there unsafe areas with a higher crime factor to avoid?
Is it easy to find furnished options first while settling in and getting acquainted?

Thank you in advance for all your feedback.

This will be best posted on the relocation forum - in fact your questions are ones which are frequently asked and you'll find most of the answers if you do a quick search on that forum using the search engine.

It's almost impossible to section off the many different areas into "upscale" and "downscale" and the same goes for safety. There are "upscale" areas with "downscale" sections close by. Once you start looking around you'll understand!

The majority of rentals are in fact furnished. If you look on craigslist you won't find too many places unfurnished!

Hop onto the relocation forum and you'll find a ton of good information there. Good luck with the move.

Thank you. Yes I realized I posted in the wrong section after the fact and wasn't sure how to delete or move it.

I tried to search similar topic in the relocation forum and assumed it had been asked before, but couldn't find any relevant threads. Perhaps I will try again.

I appreciate your response.

Change the search date to "all" as the default is very limited.

citygal: The way neighborhoods are laid out, it is much more street by street. In my neighborhood, which I think is a "good" neighborhood, there are unfinished houses (for 15 years) with rebar sticking up, dogs that run wild in the street, and residential homes that are obviously running businesses. On the other hand, we don't have gun shots like I hear other neighborhoods experience. You just have to come and feel the chaos. 😉

Go to the relocation forum where you'll find answers to most of your questions in the general information available on the drop-down menus top of the page.
