My husband and I are moving to st thomas for work related reasons. During our search for rentals we have been having trouble finding any that are long term. More imprortantly that will fit in our modest budget. Are there any available . And how many might accept pets? This has been keeping me up at night for the last few weeks and I realy need some help.
Thanks

Dear Crystal (and Chuck):

It's very, very difficult to find a rental when you're not here. Yes, there certainly are long-term rentals available on STT and there certainly are some landlords who allow pets, but you really have to be here to find them.

As a former landlord of just a little studio apartment, I have horrendous old tales to tell about some of my tenants and many landlords are leery of renting to newcomers period because their attrition rate is so high. And that's just ONE of the reasons!

It's not impossible, though. Have you contacted any local realtors with specifics about your needs and your basic wherewithall, references, etc? That would be a good start. Several realtors act as management agents for absentee landlords. Since they are basically responsible to the landlord if problems arise, you'll initially end up paying upmarket price but it might be a route to investigate if you can get a 6-month to a one-year lease agreement.

Once you get your feet wet, get established in your job(s) and decide to stay, then you can start looking around.

I hope this helps - but you're going to have do your own prep. Other board people may be able to suggest realtors who you might contact.

Good luck!

Crystal,

If you are not on island, you will really only find vacation rentals. What we did and many do, is find a monthly or weekly rental and then look for long term once on island. Villa Fairview for example is perfect for that temporary housing. You will find links to that on this board. When you arrive, pick up a Daily News Paper(75 cents - daily except for Sunday) or better an Island Trader(free - once a week published on Thursdays). They list most of the rentals and many long term. Good luck with everything.

It seems like a lot of people are moving to STT with pets, and everyone is having the same problem. If anyone does succeed in finding pet-friendly rentals, beyond what they need, please post them on this site. I would hate to think of pets being left behind because it was not possible to find suitable accomodation.

Hello! I can simpathize with your pet concerns since I am going through the same thing. I am relocating to STT with my Basset Hound in less than a month. I had a hard time find a place to stay with my dog short term. Rentalo.com had a lot of listings for short term rentals (nightly/weekly). I found the place I am staying at there. We are staying the Treetops Villa. Their website is www.beachtops.com. From what we found, the rates are resonable and they are pet friendly. They don't even require a pet deposit. I will right back once I am there to give complete details but I hope this helps for now.
Good Luck!

HI! Your message is a sight for sore eyes! My boyfriend and I are moving to STT in about a month & we have two cats. He has a job lined up in Red Hook, so this is great. I was just wondering how small the apt is and how much it's going for. Feel free to email me the info: chefdunc13@aol.com

Thanks!!

We have found a place to stay, The Villa Fairview. They accept pets and have a great monthly rate of $800. The Island View Guest House also accepts pets and their monthly rates start at $1,150. Pirates Cove does not accept pets.

Hope this helps a little:)
