Moving to St. Thomas

I have a few questions about moving to St. Thomas and would greatly appreciate any suggestions you could offer. I am graduating from college in may of this year and would like to move to St. Thomas. I have about two years experience in the hotel industry as well as various internships in sales and sports marketing. Do any of the resorts offer any kind of programs for college students interested in employment, say working and living at the resort, because I have heard rumors? Anyways, I was wondering if there is a way to find any entry level positions prior to arriving in the islands. I would be somewhat hesitant moving without even having a job lined up. I would have no problem working in the tourism industry, but am curious if it is possible to make a descent living considering expenses. Thanks for your help, Ryan.

Dear Ryan: First of all, congrats on your upcoming graduation! It is difficult to get positions in the VI without actually being on island. Most employers want to see you and know that you are stable, etc. It is usually a good idea to come down with enough money to keep yourself going for at least 3 months while you search for something and get used to the island way. On the other hand, the big hotels are mainly Marriott- Frenchman's Reef, Renaissance and Ritz Carlton. It may help if you approach them in the states and see if they have such plans. The other big hotels are Wyndham (STT), Westin (STJ) and Caneel -Rosewood Hotels (STJ). Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! One more question, personally speaking, what amount of money do you feel would be smart to show up with on the island? Thanks, Ryan

Ryan: It is hard to know how you expect to live!! Some can get by on bare bones and others want to enjoy themselves while settling in. I would research short term housing on the 'net to get an idea of cost for a month at a guest house, figure that food is a little more expensive than in the States, throw in some money for getting around and having fun...
