I am currently a 24yr old student and decided to move to the virgin islands to pursue my life dream. I am currently with someone, (the love of my life) we have been together 3yrs, and he has decided to come with me.
I was wondering if anyone had any relationship advice for us as far as.... how do we handle everything (selling all of our belongings) and starting over???? It seems that everything is happening SO fast. I would really appreciate ANY advice (relationship, OR tips on moving down there)
THANKS SOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

Girl....I've been thru it a few times...I'm 32 and had more than my fair share of husbands! LOL 🙂 ....

Is it his dream, as well....or is he moving to pacify you?

Belongings are just that...belongings.....can be bought again. If it means the world to you, put it in storage state-side. Or, leave it with your folks...like photos and the like. (I was lucky enough to have them let me put it in their attic.)

Your life with him in the islands should be no different than in the states. If you two are in love, you will overcome anything. I'm in the same situation...jump in with both feet....what have you got to lose?

Starting over, in my world, is looked at as a challenge instead of a drawback. Make it fun. Now instead of "yours" and "my" stuff, it will be "ya'lls" stuff....know what I mean. New life, new peeps, new surroundings, new love and new trials.

Give it a shot. Live your dream. You only live once. (This time).

Alix

🙂

shay: Back up to the "student" part... Are you going to finish school before you move?

no, I am going to uvi down there. Hopefully find a job first and finish my degree when I get down there. I have about a semester to go......Hopefully we can get jobs soon, we both love (ok like) the hospitality buisness.

Okay, you didn't ask for this advice, but ;)... Spend the semester up there and FINISH. If you transfer to UVI, I promise it will be more than a semester as they have a number of required classes. Once you have your degree in hand, THEN move.

Short post Wholeheartedly agree with East Ender.

Relationship advice? Go to a reputable counsellor. Not here - there! If you have any problems with your relationship on your home turf, they will increase enormously if you come here,

Again, I'm with East Ender and his sage advice.

If your looking at a semester to finish your degree, do it stateside. The island isn't going anywhere, you should be able to complete a semester standing on your head. You'll look funny doing it that way but I think it will be much easier to complete a degree in familiar surroundings. Not that it can't be completed on STX. And remember, this is just advice. You do what your heart tells you two. My guy is ex military and he read your thread. He states that you should stay on trac with school and get that box checked off the list. Then you can concentrate on the move and jobs on STX. Two boxes to check off instead of three once on island. Plus, with a degree you might expand your job opportunity and income options immensly. I don't live on island yet so I hope no one takes offense to my advice. Note: plan your attack, attack your plan, stay focused. guess who said that one? good luck

Shay,

You should not be looking to transfer to UVI and to fulfill their requirements. Rather, you would enroll as a non-matriculated student there. It is completely possible that your home university will allow the transfer of the remaining credits back to that institution. BUT, be sure to check with the stateside school's advising office AND the major program to see if there are sufficient courses offered at UVI that will transfer and satisfy degree and major requirements.

That said, I agree that your wisest course of action would be to complete your degree where you are and then move. It could also make your job search easier when you arrive.

I very much agree with everyone as far as finishing school in colorado although, if I stay here, I fear that I will NEVER make the move...So, with that said, I have sold my car, and most of our belongings, and we are ready to take the plunge.
As of now we are lookiing at apts, and need to move in august 1st if anyone knows of anything, I would love to hear from them:)
thanks
sharae

My new motto in life is to not give any unsolicited advice- but since you asked :)...

If the only reason that you don't finish school there is bc you are afraid you'll never make the move if you don't do it now- that is an even better reason to finish the semester there. I am not trying to discourage you- believe me- but if you truly want to move to the islands then six months will not change that one bit! I guess I only have my personal experience to speak from- but I have been wanting/waiting for three years to do this. About a year ago some things happened in my life where I could have left- but I had some things to take care of and I stayed. One year later- my drive to make this change is as strong as ever. And, the one benefit from waiting- (again- I only waited bc I too, had to finish some things where I live) is that I know with 100% certainty that this is what I want! And, knowing with that much certainty will make those "freak out" times much more bearable- not that they won't happen though.

But, it seems as though- even if you did listen to the advice to stay and finish- you'd have to go out and by yourself some new wheels now! Goodluck with whatever you decide- I am sure it will be the right thing for you!
