Hello all. I'll be arriving in STT next week (1-20-05) and am looking for restaurant work (server/bartender) and inexpensive short term living ASAP. Anybody arriving around then or looking for a roommate? I'll definitely be checking out the Island Trader, which a lot of you have been mentioning. Any other tips. Any hostels to stay at while looking for apt.? Am coming from Vail, CO and will miss the mountains, but can't wait for the beach! Appreciate any advice you can offer.

"Hello all. I'll be arriving in STT next week (1-20-05) and am looking for restaurant work (server/bartender)"
-That shouldn't be too hard here. After you get here, get some wheels and drop bay all of the restauranbts and bars and soomeone will be looking for help.

"and inexpensive short term living ASAP."
-There is no such thing here. The cheapest place you might find will be in the neighborhood of 80-90 bucks a night.

"Anybody arriving around then or looking for a roommate? I'll definitely be checking out the Island Trader, which a lot of you have been mentioning. "
-Sean just moved here from CO about 5 days ago. Great guy. I'll tell him to check the board and maybe you two can help each other out.

"Any other tips"
-Whoa! Haha! Waaayy to broad a question!

" Any hostels to stay at while looking for apt.?"
-Not that I am aware of.

"Am coming from Vail, CO and will miss the mountains, "
-We have mouintains, too! Just not nearly as high or nearly as snowcovered!
Ours are surrounded by water!!

-I just talked to Sean on the phone, and he will be checking the board and replying to give you his perspective.

Bring lots of shorts and few long pants!

The Crystal Palace with Ronnie who posts on the message board is a good 1 week kind of place to stay while you find work and an apt.

Hey Marty- when you say "wheels" I assume you mean a car, which definitely isn't in my budget. How about getting around the island on a bike? Thanks also for your other input. Thanks to Island Paul as well!

Note - before you go looking for a job, get your health card at the hospital. You won't get a job anywhere (in the food business) without it. I wouldn't recommend getting around the island on a bike. I have seen some major accidents with bikers (motorized). Your choice though. 😉

For short term housing - the featured place is Pirates Cove Inn - www.piratescovevi.com on this website. Good luck with your move!

Yep,I meant a car! A bicycle is not a viable source of transportation unless you are in extremely good shape. I, myself, have two motorcycles, and I think it's the best way to get around. True, thouugh, you do need to learn to ride a little differently than in the States. I have had one accident iin 7 years, but it almost killed me. Still on the bikes, tho! Ugh!

You can pick up a decent "island car" for about $1,500. Using taxis and safaris (dollar buses)n to shop for an apartment isn't very feasible. It can be done, but I wouldn't want to do it.
