For example, it is just before 6am, still dark outside, and St. Croix temp is 84, heat index says it feels like 94. Things cool down in a month or so. Safer for your dog to fly then. Hopefully your pups don't miss each other too much! Better safe than sorry. I had a friend many years ago that had to delay her move to the states for 3 weeks. It was stressful for her because she had to wait and see what the temps were going to be to find out if that day was going to be moving day. I personally loved to have her and her dog as house guests for those few weeks 😀

Thank you. Yes, we are trying to find her a temporary foster right now for a month or however long it takes to cool down to safe flying weather for the pup and then just fly whichever friend helps us out down to the island for a little vacation. Pretty good deal I think! 🙂

Bring your own car! We just got here a couple months ago and shipped one car over and purchased one here, but in hindsight, we should have shipped two.

Yep. ALWAYS bring a car. After a LOT of repairs my CRV is doing good. Friends left and I got a nice Jeep for 5k. the roads on STX are WAY better than STT so you wont spend as much in repairs as you do there at least.

Hi and congrats on your coming move - very exciting! Just curious where you were able to find a rental that allowed two dogs? We're looking for a place that will allow our two pups to come!

Thanks!
Zina

Thanks for the info on the cars guys! We are currently trying to find one here to ship. We only have a week left here so we're looking everyday!
Zina-I will contact the woman that we are renting from and see if she has any other available apartments.

If you only have a week left, I really really suggest you get in touch with Meme St. John and have her handle all of the logistics. She will tell you everything you need and facilitate for you. It's not that you can't do it on your own, it's just that it takes a bit more time and leg work and it doesn't sound like you are going to have time for that. I would contact her BEFORE you even buy a car. You will have to pay more in taxes if it's a foreign made car. Having a car with a higher ground clearance and 4WD are a plus too.
memestjohn@gmail.com, or call 340-244-0519

Here is an example of cost (this was the cost for shipping a Ford F150)

Ocean Freight
$1,375.00
AES Filing
$75.00

Sub Total Shipping
$1,450.00

Estimated cost of clearing and registering a :

Road Tax
0.16
4433lbs
$709.28

Permit to move
$10.00

Service Charge
$75.00

Sub Total Clearance
$794.28

Registration
$120.00

Service Charge
$75.00

Sub Total Registration
$195.00

Total Clearance and Registration
$989.28

Grand Total
$2,439.28

Thank you so much Stjohnjulie!!! That was all very helpful information. Who is Meme St John? Also, that is a lot to ship. But you all think it is worth doing that as opposed to buying a car on the island? I am going by what you all say bc you are the ones that are wise and have done this before. Thanks again!

We have even looked into the option of buying a street legal golf cart. Does anyone know if we can get them registered and legally drive it?

Don't think so.
The only street legal golf cart I've seen was in Cruz Bay, St. John and that was a very long time ago. Best to check with BMV, directly, but don't count on it.

We are having to leave the one pup behind and our family is bringing her in a month or two when the temp is safe. Thank you all for your help!

The quote I shared with you was for a big-ish truck. I think that cars are going to be less. And yes, it was worth it. The truck was about 5k, was in perfect condition (until it got here :D) and shipping was about $2,500. We never would have found anything similar in condition here for $7,500. About the time we got the truck there was a similar one for sale on St. John and it was 9k with a huge dent in the side of it.

Awesome. Thanks Stjohnjulie! Are you living in Stx? I have found a couple of just getting around cars that don't look very pretty on the island. But I'm not sure how good they run. We are going to look at a jeep tomorrow. I emailed meme St. John but haven't heard back? I may just find a shipping company and get a quote.

A jeep is a good choice. It will maintain it resale value and will hold up.

I live on St. John. And that quote I gave you was from Jacksonville FL to St. Thomas. I once bought a car from St. Croix and had it shipped to St. Thomas and I can't remember all the details, but I think it cost about $300 to have that done. And another $25 to get it to St. John. And that purchase was worth it too, but the car did need about $1,000 of work done on it within a years time. We go through a lot of breaks and tires and that can really add up depending on what kind of car you have. If my husband didn't need a truck for work, we would have one.

I think VI Cargo ships cars for about $1500.00. Road tax and customs about 1500.00 . To STX .

I got a quote and your estimate was about accurate. It's going to be around $2,400 for the jeep we are looking at for everything to get it to st croix. Now we are just debating what to do.

Jeeps are in high demand on island. Difficult to find one on island and when you do they are pricey, even an old one will cost you 5k-6k in poor condition. If you have the time and the money, get it and ship it. You can always sell it and get your money back, probably even make money.

We were actually looking at a jeep Cherokee. It's 2 door and the doors come off. It's for sale at a good price is why we were looking at it.
