Moving to STX

Hi all, I'm a nurse and will be moving to STX on Aug. 29. I was looking at renting a place in Peppertree Terrace across from the hospital. Can anybody tell me anything about the place? Is it SAFE? I was also wondering about my car situation. I have a 92 suburban that I can ship down, but I don't know if this is the smart thing to do or not. I would have to drive the car from California to Florida (Yuck). Any thoughts?

Oof, a Suburban takes up a lot of space (to ship) and it's a gas guzzler for one hell of a drive. I'd say save the money spent on getting your vehicle here and use it towards rent and deposit. The roads are pretty narrow on StX, not ideal for a wide ride like a Suburban.

I'd have to give you a thumbs down on Peppertree. (td) There should be some apts available near the hospital.

Actually Peppertree is about the only apartment near (walking) to the hospital. There is a small condo not far and some of the houses in Queen's Quarter's have apts. I looked at Peppertree once a while back. Not bad. The only problem I saw that was immediate is they don't supply TV, cable, dishes, linens, etc. so it makes it tough on a 13 week assingment nurse, but they do offer a discount to nurses, so, maybe it balances out??

I think I have to agree with you on the suburban Noah. I will look for something when I get there. Thanks Juanita, I am not coming for 13 weeks though, I am making the move for good. I probably should have mentioned that before. I am making the move alone (for now), so I only need a one bedroom, but I would like the facility to at least provide water. I am not picky, just want somewhere safe.

I am so excited to start this new chapter of my life and a little scared at the same time. So, any advice and help is greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, since I am going to be living alone, it would be nice if I could find a place that allows dogs.

I hope I get to meet some of the wonderful people on this board.

I would check out Queen's Quarter. As far as the Suburban goes... they're great for off-road stuff, but if you're not living way up in the hills, you won't need it. (If you did want to ship a vehicle, there are companies that will haul it across the country for you for roughly $1000.)

We have a suburban here as an "extra" vehicle. I never drive it unless I have no other choice as it can be very hard to find a place to park and can be difficult to drive in town with the narrow roads (and people parking halfway in the street).
Someone I know lived at Peppertree and it was good for her. Peppertree is gated, they are trailer homes with basic fixtures, the grounds seem to be maintained and the people I met that live there were nice. I wouldn't commit to any place prior to seeing it yourself in person. Find a short term rental for when you first arrive and then check out your options.

How far is Queens Quarters to the hospital? Does anyone have a phone number for them? Where can I buy a used car from on the island? Can you suggest a dealership? I will be doing this alone, so I am a little worried I wont know what I am getting as far as cars go. My husband always handled that stuff. I just drove it. I don't have enough extra money to learn a lesson with buying a car at this time if you know what I mean. Thanks for all your help so far. I can't wait!!!!!

Queens Quarters is a neighborhood right up the road. I'd say it's about 1/2 mile away. I was in the market for an apt in late April and I know there was a few spots in Queen's Quarters.
There was also 2 places available next door to the hospital, on the same side of the road. Juanita, that's what I was thinking when I made the comment about some spots being available.

There's plenty of used cars on the island. Check craiglist often and the classified board on this site. Word of mouth is the quickest and easiest way to find a deal. When people are moving off island, they get desperate in that last week! I bought a great island car for cheap from a friend of a friend of a friend.

Queen's Quarter isn't a complex. It's a subdivision of individually owned homes. Many have apartments in them, but you would need to locate them on an individual basis. Maybe someone on here knows someone who knows someone.....There is a condo complex very near the hospital called Queen's Ridge. Again, though, individual owners. A couple of the Realtors that post regularly here rep some of their units. On a side note, even though QR is very near, I wouldn't suggest walking home on a night shift. Just my opinion.

I MAY have a small efficiency for the first of September that you could rent short term until you get to know your way around, etc., or you might decide to stay!:-) It's fully furnished and equipped. The current tenant is scheduled to leave Sept. 1, but he keeps extending, so I can't really commit it right now, but if interested, look at our website: http://www.virginislandsrentals.com and take a look at the page for Efficiency 1B. It's really small but cute! We allow pets, with some restrictions, but you won't feel a need for a dog here. Very secure feeling. We are about 2.5 miles from the hospital. You would need a car pretty quickly. Let me know if I can help.

There are many medical folks here at Ocean Terrace in Estate Orange Grove. It's maybe 15-20 minutes' drive to the hospital.
