I have lived in Colorado my entire life and I am very bored. I have nothing holding me back from moving I have no kids and no wife. Currently I am employed for a smaller telecommunications company where I engineer fiber optics for them. I am very diversified as far as what I can do. I desperately want to move where snow is olny talked about. Can any one give me any insight as to who I can talk to about any jobs. Any response is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi Jerimah.... I know exactley what you mean, except of seeing snow in Colorado, I get to see it in Michigan, and I hate it!!!!!
I too am considering moving to VI, but am a little scared....
I was thinking about possibly teaching, so have been looking into that a little bit. I currently work for an insurance co. in HR but feel it's time for a change. Maybe we can share advice that we get? Good luck, keep in touch!!

Andrea,
I too am a little scared about moving there an a whim but things around here are just no fun any more. My biggest concern like most that want to move there is finding a job. I have money saved up and every chance I get I have been looking in the papers and contacting anyone that may be looking for work or know someone that does. I can do a wide amount things from welding to engineering fiber optics so I am sure that there is at least something that I could do there.
Which island do you want to go to? Myself I really like St. John but like most things there everything is a little more expensive so I think I will have to stick with St. Thomas or St. Croix until I get things figured out.
Maybe we could be moving buddies and go into this little adventure together.

Hello Jeremiah,

Perhaps you could contact Innovative Communications (they own/offer local telephone, internet, cellular, newspaper...I think I am missing others but you get the picture) and see if there have openings that are along the lines of what you have experience in or something you could learn to do based on your experiences they have a web site at http://www.iccvi.com/company.htm

Hi Frog 🙂
Well as funny as this is going to sound, I have never been to VI. My parent's have been to St. John numerous times and love it, so that's why I'm so interested. I just really want a change, and this will be a great place to start!! I am going to be finished with my bachelor's degree in December, and am hoping to get a job in HR. Currently I work in HR and really like it. If that dosen't work out, then I might look at teaching, or doing something else. How old are you? when are you planning on moving?

keep in touch,
Andrea

Andrea,
It sounds like we are just alike as far as wanting to get the hell out of our situation. I am 25 with no kids or wife just me and my dog. I really haven't set a firm date as to when I will move I just know that I do want to. I want to have some kind of job prospect before I up and leave. Keep in touch it is nice to talk to someone that wants to do that same thing as me.

Hello,
I am 24, with no kids, or husband, and I don't even have a dog!! I just figure i'm young, so why not experience everything that life has to offer, including doing something like this. Also I figure I can be doing the same thing I am doing in
michigan, in VI with a the beautiful surroundings and weather all around me 🙂
Have a good day!
Andrea

Andrea,
I just wish there was someway or someone to talk to about finding a job. I am open to anything just as long as I could live on the money that someone offered me. I am willing to do more then one job as well. I have so much to say about going down there I could probably write a novel. I know I bore my friends and relatives with the stories that I tell them about VI but that is the number one thing on my mind and my number one desire right now. Hell I would even dig ditches to get down there. We both need to just go down there for like a week and look around and talk to people about what we both want to do. I think that shows them that we are very serious about it. Are you at work right now?

I feel a little voyeuristic reading this conversation, but...
I just wanted to confirm something you hinted at Jeremiah: no one will hire you off-island. You are absolutely coreect; you need to be here. No matter how good your credentials may be on paper, my experience (and that of many other relocated statesiders) is that employers need to see you and know that you are serious about your plans to live here.
Ok, I'm done and I will step out of the way now...
🙂

Onika,
First of all I love your name. Second of all you are not bardging in on anything. I have so many questions for you I hope you don't mind. With what you know now and you were in my shoes how would you go about moving there? Who are your phone companies there? What is the job market like there? As you have probaly read I am willing to do anything for work I am very diversified and can do many things, I grew up on a 2,500 acre ranch with cattle and horses so I am very good and fixing things and doing things on my own. Your response is very welcome and I hope you reply back.

Islander,
Thank you very much I have been looking for some kind of contact for this company but I have been unable to find anything when I do a search. Do you live there now? I really appreciate your response.

Jeremiah - The main phone company is the one I mentioned already. Other phone companies (primarily long distance) are ATT their adminstative office is (340)776-6000 Their is Sprint at (340)715-5400.... but as mentioned Innovative is the phone company for the USVI, ATT is a big company for long distance service as well as others. You might look in the yellow pages www.viphonebook.com and search for telecommunications, telephone companies and others you think would be relevant to you.

As for your experience with cattle - St. Croix would be the place if you actually wanted to work at a farm... there is a site for one of them - http://www.islands.vi/~pisella/

You should read other post, you can search them for different topics using the search feature at the top of the post, same area as the Post New Topic links... Also read through the moving guide www.vinow.com/move

All the best.

Jumping into the conversation here...It's refreshing and actually helpful to know there are others who want to live there. I spent a week there in May and want to go back to check into the serious aspects of moving. I hope it all works out for you guys. Maybe one day we'll all be sitting at the Greenhouse Bar and realize we did it! Good luck to all of us!

Stacey,

I read once that it is not answer but the question that brings enlightenment..... so if you never ask the questions whether they seem silly or not you will never have the answer either!!

Ask questions; being scared and prepared is a better way to move then scared and unprepared. There is lots of information on this site and on this board and lots of people willing to suggest places to find info. or to help with your concerns and questions.

All the best as you plan your move.
